About Elizabeth

Students
Children come in all sizes. Some are petite, some are tall, some are slender, some are plump. [**I fall into the short, plump grandmotherly type!]
Likewise, their abilities are in all levels, regardless of the grade placement, which is determined by the year each student was born.
The gap widens in both of these differences – size and ability – with each month of the year. Attitudes and confidence (or lack of) are developed along with these differences.

Tutor
From childhood, I was certain I would be a teacher. I did teach first grade for five years – and loved it – but events in my life caused me to change careers to computer programming in the 1970’s. One reason for entering that new field was that whereas I could fix problems in computers, the problems of people, especially children, can’t be “fixed” so readily.
I have enjoyed a lifetime of work in various positions and fields, most of which included teaching: computers, music, or office work.
In 2007 I came full circle and, to my delight, began working with children again. I worked in Naples Elementary School, Vernal, Utah, as Reading Tutor in Kindergarten through Fifth grade until June 2011. My husband, Ken, and I retired in the Hagerman area at that time and I volunteered in Hagerman Elementary Kindergarten, until Ken passed on. I was a Paraeducator at Dodge Elementary School February-May this year.

HOW CAN I HELP?

I have been private tutoring since February 2008. Because I enjoy working with children, parents and teachers, I assist youngsters with their education after school. This means a continuation of study for them through all of the days – including summer. Making reading and language arts a constant part of life can help them to realize the joy of education as well as the need for it. And we all have fun doing it!
Lessons can be scheduled to fit the busy life of your family. I will work with a youngster one, two, or three times a week. I recommend at least twice a week, but once can be sufficient for some.
Sessions will require an hour’s time: getting together, performing various activities, and closing with a goal or plan.
I welcome all students, kindergarten through sixth grade, in math, reading and language arts, which includes writing and spelling. We can make progress to increase fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and enjoyment and build self-confidence.
Whether a child is behind, on target, or advanced, we can work together if parent, student or teacher believes there is a need for individualized instruction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Upon graduating from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake Iowa with top honors in Elementary Education, I received a two-year teacher certificate.
Then I had valuable experience teaching first graders, up to class size 35, for five years in Dayton, Iowa and Alsea, Oregon.
I was a successful intervention aide in RIA (K-5) in Vernal, Utah, from 9/2007 to 2/2009 and 10/2010 to 5/2011 in Naples Elementary School.
Rewarding progress was made individually by students, in grades 1 through 6, who I tutored privately from May 2008 to June 2011.
I was Paraeducator at Dodge Elementary School (K-4) from February to May 22, 2014, in Dodge Elementary School, Grand Island, Nebraska, receiving a very satisfactory evaluation.
Although I retired from the Federal government as an Administrative Officer (Manager) in Vernal District, Bureau of Land Management just before 2000, I have been a "teacher" all my life, in piano, computer use, and supervision.
"Telling is NOT teaching," was the quote from a professor that has remained with me throughout my life. I am a natural teacher.
