About Garrett

I'm a current high school English teacher and former journalist who is passionate about all things writing, reading and English. I have spent the past four years doing a combination of writing, editing, reading and teaching. From editing and writing articles to teaching creative writing and literature, I love helping my students gain a better understanding of English while pushing them to do greater and deeper work.

At Phillips Academy, the #2 boarding school in the country according to Business Insider, I teach both freshmen and sophomores in literature and composition courses. I have also worked in the school's Writing Center, so I am comfortable doing one-on-one tutoring with students from all grade levels. I also teach International Students during the summer and am fluent in Spanish, so I am very willing to work with students from all sorts of backgrounds. I would love to hear what sort of learning needs I could help you with!

My background in English and journalism qualifies me to tutor students in general English studies, grammar, literature from all time periods, proofreading, and both creative and non-creative writing.

While currently in Andover, MA, until August, I am available to students online across the country. In August, I will be moving to Fargo, ND, and will begin accepting students for in-person tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My current work as an English teacher at the highly ranked Phillips Academy boarding school in New England has given me plenty of experience teaching students reading and close reading skills, which will benefit them on their college examinations.

As a student, I scored a 35 and a 36 (perfect 75/75) on the English portion of the ACT, so I am very familiar with how to take and explain that portion of the test.

ACT Reading

As a high school English teacher at Phillips Academy, an elite boarding school in New England, much of my work revolved around teaching students reading and close reading skills, which are critical to understanding the Reading section of the ACT.

When I took the test itself, I scored in the 95th percentile, so I am familiar with the workings of the section and would love to help students prepare for and succeed on it!

English

I currently teach high school English at Phillips Academy, an elite boarding school in New England, so I am very familiar with teaching students all the aspects of English coursework.

As an undergraduate I studied literature and creative writing, so my own educational background directly aligns with this subject. I am more than happy to provide more information or discuss the tutoring needs of any student needing help in English.

Grammar

As a current high school English teacher and former journalist, I have spent the past four years mastering my grammar skills for both my own writing and my teaching. My familiarity with both MLA and AP style also make me versatile when dealing with grammar.

Literature

I completed my undergraduate work in English literature and creative writing at the University of Missouri, and I currently teach high school English at Phillips Academy, one of the top two boarding schools in the country, per Business Insider. At the school, I also work with students in the Writing Center to provide one-on-one help for their essays. I have experience teaching both classic texts and more contemporary fiction. I am a voracious reader and read books both for classes and my own study outside of work hours, and am more than happy to help students with any literature assignments they might have.

Proofreading

After working as a journalist and copy editor for three years, I now teach high school English at Phillips Academy, ranked the #2 boarding school in the country by Business Insider in 2015. I have experience editing articles, teaching freshmen literature and sophomore composition, and working one-on-one with students in our school's Writing Center. I give thorough and comprehensive feedback both verbally and through written comments (either in-person or online).

Reading

As a current high school English teacher at Phillips Academy, an elite boarding school in New England, reading is one of the main skills I teach to students. Without a solid reading background, writing essays, developing vocabulary and interpreting work in any subject is very difficult.

I am more than happy to help students with any reading skills at any level!

Spanish

I began studying Spanish in the seventh grade and took it through my junior year of undergraduate study, earning a minor to go along with my English and journalism majors.

I also spent five months abroad in Pamplona, Spain, where I took four journalism courses in Spanish and spent most of my time speaking and learning Spanish with native speakers.

I would feel comfortable tutoring students in Spanish through high school, and I would also feel comfortable tutoring lower levels of college Spanish.

Vocabulary

As a writer, high school English teacher and journalist, I have long known the importance of a good vocabulary. Since my days as a student I have made a habit of looking up words I come across that I am unfamiliar with and learning their definition to the point that I feel comfortable using them in my own daily life.

I like to get creative and fun with my vocabulary lessons, and I often create games or challenges for my students when we work on vocabulary. I am willing to work with students at any level on this!

Writing

I have worked as a writer for multiple newspapers and magazines for the past six years, and I currently teach freshman literature and sophomore composition at a boarding high school in New England where I also work one-on-one with students in our school's Writing Center. I am proficient in helping students with writing across the board, including essays, nonfiction and fiction creative writing, and journalism. I can provide thorough written and verbal feedback both in-person and online.
