Meredith College (Spanish n Art)
University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Master's)
I was born in Venezuela of American parents. I grew up in Guatemala Central America, where I learned my grammar and verbs. I came to the US in high school and took regular classes at Salem Academy. I majored in Spanish in college.
I like meeting and working with new people. I like teaching students effective learning methods. Usually, a language teaches a culture at the same time and that can make the job easier or harder depending on the point of view. I like seeing my students begin to succeed in class and become more confident as they understand what is happening in class. In English, success is brought about through understanding class and being able to express themselves better on paper.
Along with my BA in Spanish, I grew up in Guatemala, CA, where I learned grammar and verbs the native way. I have tutored many high school students in different states. I can read and understand literature, so can help with reading comprehension in upper level classes. I can tutor college level Spanish as I understand the advanced nuances involved in the writing. In high school, I had bilingual students as well as Americans. I have maintained my reading materials. I have taught students in Chicago and raised them a letter grade.
I am a native speaker. I worked with the Montessori method, doing immersion in pre-school and kindergarten. Teaching adults to speak Spanish in Berlitz was fun. Berlitz uses a systematic method that involves speaking from the beginning.
I believe that learning a language can be fun. Sometimes we get stuck and need help understanding the grammar. Sometimes, we need help with English grammar before we can do Spanish grammar. I like to have fun while learning by explaining some of the meanings of vocabulary. Learning and studying Spanish on a daily basis is the best way to learn a language and culture. I have translated forms for the State of NC. Today, I sometimes use my Spanish as an Interpreter in my workplace, when needed.
I learned English grammar with an English tutor. I found I knew better grammar than US students. I took advanced classes and was able to discuss classical literature both from a reading comprehension, as well as a written essay vantage point. I can help with the finer points of grammar and paper organization. In my work, I write what is the equivalent of a term paper for each report 10 times a month. I practice critical thinking and careful wording as I write.
I am what is known as a bilingual person. What that means is that I am fluent in both languages. I can read, write, write poetry and speak without an accent in both languages. I enjoy teaching both English and Spanish. I can be especially helpful with English as a 2nd language as I have experienced some of those pitfalls myself. I was born in Venezuela of American parents. I grew up in Guatemala Central America, where I learned my grammar and verbs. I came to the US in high school and took regular classes at Salem Academy. I majored in Spanish in college.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in Spanish.
