About Olivia

I have been tutoring, in one format or another, since high school. I was a peer tutor in high school, and worked as an editor at a teaching paper (a newspaper that exists to teach students journalism and writing skills) in undergrad. For the past two years, I have served as a Writing Fellow - a cross between a writing tutor and a TA - and an ESL/ELL tutor, while I was in graduate school.

Currently, I teach at a local community college, which has given me a great deal of experience in teaching students of many backgrounds.

I enjoy working with students to meet their individual goals. Primarily, I seek to ensure that the writing students/tutorees are producing matches what they want to produce, in quality as well as in message. If I can tutor a student well enough that he or she no longer requires a tutor, I will have succeeded.

I have years of experience with many types of writing. I work as a copy/content editor for a medical textbook and have tutored for a business writing class, which gives me the skills necessary to work with many types of writing. I have worked with ESL/ELL students for two years, which allows me to successfully tutor students grappling with a language barrier. Through many years of my own writing, I have learned a great deal about how to assist students with common writing mistakes, including issues such as passive voice, punctuation use, tone decisions, and other things that are difficult to teach in a large classroom setting.

I work from home and have flexible hours. Feel free to contact me so that we can set up a session!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I hold a MA in English literature and teach English writing at a community college. I have tutored English on a peer level since high school. I have also been a TA and writing tutor on an undergraduate level for the past two years.
