University of California Berkeley (Architecture)
Art and History are my twin passions... I have drawn since before I can remember, and my preferred media at this time are pastels and colored pencils. I have taken several drawing classes over the years, so I have a good feel for what works and what doesn't. I also love history, and enjoy discussing it, as well as related fields such as travel, politics, art, and food. I am an architect by training and profession, a graduate of the University of California Berkeley, and a life-long learner by habit. I have traveled around the country and lived in several places. I love to read, and I think that's one of the reasons I am interested in sharing knowledge with others.
I enjoy engaging with others in conversation, but I am hesitant to impose my beliefs. I think learning occurs most effectively when a dialogue develops, and ideas are proposed, examined, and shared in a context of trust and encouragement. Whether lessons follow an outline or are more free-wheeling, I think it is important for the learning process to be stimulating and energizing.
I am collaborative by nature, and I have a playful sense of humor, which I think is very helpful in any learning situation. I think learning about new things should be fun, interesting, stimulating, and enjoyable. I think my teaching style reflects that. While I have never been a professional teacher, I have done many presentations to students of all ages in informal classroom settings. I am easy-going but interested in my subjects and will do my best to impart that knowledge -- and the enjoyment of learning it -- to those I tutor. Art and History are my twin passions... In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in Architecture from the University of California Berkeley, 30+ years of experience, and am licensed in the state of North Carolina. I have also completed a variety of presentations on architecture and related topics in public schools (elementary, middle and high school) as well as more formal conference/seminar settings. I have a strong interest in and knowledge of architectural history. In the past I have used handouts and powerpoint presentations to illustrate my points.
I have been drawing since I was 5 yrs old. I have sold many of my pieces of art, and have won awards in independently judged shows. I took several art and painting classes in college, and I have also taken several workshops and been tutored myself, including private lessons within the last five years.
I am very interested in world religions, and have been attending religious services since childhood. My stepfather was a clergyman, and he was quite knowledgeable and thoughtful. I am well-read and have learned about a wide variety of faith traditions in addition to the Christian faith I was raised in. I have completed many presentations in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as conference presentations.
