About Letesha

The years that I have spent honing my craft as a teacher, have informed me that I am actually not a great teacher but I am an excellent coach. If we think about the function of a coach on a team we see him (or her) as the driving force behind the players. When in all actuality, it is the work of the players that wins the game while the guidance and motivation of the coach that helps them. I have spent the last 14 years helping students to find the skills within themselves to be successful in my science or math class. I don't take credit for teaching kids a skill, but I have been able to allow my students to see what skills they already possessed that can be used to acquire greater knowledge and understanding. As a teacher, I have learned that in the classroom it is important to develop a rapport with our students. You can lead a student to their potential, but only after they recognize that your sincerity and concern for them as a whole is real. I have been allowed to lead different student groups in mentoring and other extracurricular activities throughout my career. I feel that having a positive role model/mentor as a teacher can change the life of a student. I would like to work with the parent and the student to build a solid team that nurtures the student so that he or she can reach their highest potential. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a B.S. Mathematics, a M.S. Adolescent Education Grades 7-12, and am a Certified Teacher (NY & NC) (HS & MS).

ASVAB

I've reviewed several sample ASVAB tests and I am confident that I can help you with all of the general academic areas (General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Math Knowledge).

I have a B.S. Mathematics, a M.S. Adolescent Education Grades 7-12, and am a Certified Teacher (NY & NC) (HS & MS).

Elementary (K-6th)

In my early years of teaching, I began in the elementary school setting working closely with young Kindergarten and 1st grade students on their daily tasks. Although I am a subject teacher by trade, I'm also a fundamentalists teacher who provides a holistic approach that is useful to even the youngest of students. In addition, I am the mom to an elementary school age child and often use an age appropriate version of my teaching techniques from the upper grades to work with her and help her to succeed as well. Teaching little ones is like a game of memory: the skills are like the pictures on the cards, and once they "get the picture" on each card, the teacher then helps them with their ability to "remember" the skill and "match (apply)" them with the appropriate question.

Elementary Math

I have a B.S. Mathematics, a M.S. Adolescent Education Grades 7-12, and am a Certified Teacher (NY & NC) (HS & MS).

Linear Algebra

I have a B.S. in Mathematics. I have spent the majority of my math teaching yrs. (5 total) teaching Algebra specifically to students in grades 8 - 10. My methods include supplying the student with a ready made algorithm (step by step procedure) to help them thru a required task.

Logic

I have a B.S. in Mathematics. Logic is a subject in which I was very successful as a student and I am very comfortable teaching it as well.

Reading

I was an Academic Intervention Services Math & Reading Specialist (small group instruction for at-risk students)

Regents

I have a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Biology. I have done extensive work with Regents Exam prep and have prepared many students and student groups for various different math Regents exams. In the past I've had a success rate of well over 90% for my students.

Study Skills

Students often need a game plan to be successful, and study skills are a huge part of that game plan. As a teacher, I can assist students with finding a logical approach to planning their game plan for success. I have had extensive training as a student and a teacher in regards to these types of best practices, and I've even taught classes (College Seminar) as well as led mentoring groups that have taken a closer look at helping students be successful by establishing and maintaining good study tactics. I believe the old adage "if you fail to plan then plan to fail," and I aim to give all of my students the tools they need to effectively PLAN for their success!
