About Robert

I'm a senior at UNCW from Clayton, North Carolina. I became an English major to study writing of all types, and I became a Spanish major to travel and see the world through another set of words. Journalism has taught me how to communicate with efficiency; how to understand what is necessary and what is obsolete in everyday written language.

I studied Spanish in Valparaíso, Chile, for five weeks in 2016, and later, in the fall, I spent three months studying in Santander, Spain. I lived with a host family in both cities, and there I learned how to live, speak, think and behave differently. I was able to absorb Spanish and make it part of me. But what makes me different from someone whose native tongue is Spanish is that I still remember the steps that I took to learn the language, and am still conscious of the similarities and differences between English and Spanish.

I'm majoring in English literature and minoring in journalism at UNCW. I received the "outstanding rookie" student media award last year for my exceptional contributions to The Seahawk, UNCW's student newspaper. I'm an avid reader and writer and think a lot about grammar, literary techniques, and narrative style. I also volunteered as an ESL teacher during the three months I studied abroad in Spain, and have spent time volunteering in Wilmington doing the same.

I'm an excellent Spanish tutor because of my understanding of linguistics and phonetics in both English and Spanish. Having studied both side-by-side, and having lived abroad in two Spanish-speaking countries, I know what it takes to acquire a new language, and some of the difficulties most students face. I also have a helpful, efficient method for learning vocabulary, especially at the beginner level.

If there's any issue with the development of a paper, with complicated grammatical questions in English or Spanish, or if there's trouble you may have with complicated literature, I can help. I have an eye for detail and will work hard to ensure that you master the material you need, as long as you are willing to put in work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I've taught ESL part-time to elementary school students in Spain, and to immigrants from Latin America and Korea in Wilmington. Specializing in both English and Spanish, I have a strong understanding of language will work hard to ensure that students can speak, read and understand English like native speakers.

Geometry

I excelled in math before I became an English Literature and Spanish major at UNCW. I entered the university with the plan to specialize in physics because I enjoy thinking logically and spatially. Geometry is a fun subject for me because I have a strong understanding of trigonometry from a university course that I excelled in and enjoyed, and I had an effective teacher in high school. Although I'm not specializing in mathematics now, my understanding of geometry is sufficient enough that I am confident I can help students get ahead in their classes with practice and deep explanation of material.

Grammar

I'm double-majoring in English literature and Spanish and minoring in journalism, and each one of these subjects teaches something different about linguistics and the structure of language, which is the essence of grammar. Whether it be in English or Spanish, I can help you understand sentence structure and parts of speech at a deep level, which will make you appreciate language more and be more capable of learning other languages.

Literature

I'm an English literary studies major at UNCW, and an avid reader of good literature. Good literature makes us better humans, more capable of empathy and action, more understanding of ourselves and our worlds. I would love to help with any needs associated with the study of literature, which is maybe my favorite part of language. Whether it has to do with comprehension, essay construction or the elements of literature, I would be glad to share the knowledge I have gathered from my years spent with literature.

Reading

I'm double-majoring in English literature and Spanish and minoring in journalism, and each one of these subjects teaches how to evaluate and think critically about texts. I've studied literature in many forms, and understand how to analyze it, respond to it, and criticize it. As a reading tutor, I want my students to understand the pleasure and privilege that comes with being a good reader; I want them to want to be good readers.

Spanish

I'm a senior Spanish major at UNCW, and I've lived and studied abroad in Spain and Chile. I've constantly exceeded expectations with my understanding of the language, and this is due to my superior study methods, particularly involving vocabulary, which is the key for learning Spanish in the classroom.

My students will enjoy speaking and writing in Spanish, which are two of the most effective and fun ways to reach a high proficiency and build confidence. I have lots of resources from my university experience that will be very helpful to students, making learning Spanish easier and more fun.

Writing

I'm an English literary studies major and a journalism minor at UNCW. I received an award last spring for my outstanding contributions to The Seahawk, UNCW's student newspaper. I can assist with any type of research paper, creative project or simple report. I'm a shrewd editor with an eye for style and organization, and I'm totally confident that a few sessions with me can make you a better writer.
