Tutor in English and Social Studies
In terms of practical qualifications, I am currently studying anthropology and political science at University of North Carolina Wilmington, through an Early College program. What that means is that although I still have not technically graduated high school, I completed all my high school courses within two years and since 2015 I have been taking courses at the university. In terms of practical qualifications, I am currently studying anthropology and political science at University of North Carolina Wilmington, through an Early College program. What that means is that although I still have not technically graduated high school, I completed all my high school courses within two years and since 2015 I have been taking courses at the university. On top of anthropological experience, my Spanish proficiency is at Spanish 201 at a university level, or about Spanish IV at the high school level, and I am conversational. I am also available as a writing tutor and a general English tutor. Additionally, I have much expertise in world history, american history, civics and economics.
On a more personal note, I have always enjoyed helping friends and family with their studies. I have no formal experience with tutoring before but I have taught classes at my own school before, including a two-day seminar on voting systems. I really enjoy when people 'get it', the moment of clarity when the student understands. For instance, this past year I spent time coaching a Science Olympiad team at the Middle School level. I worked with a group of kids to develop and test water-pressure rockets in order to maximize their flight time while safely protecting an egg as cargo and the team ended up getting first place at the regional competition! My philosophy when coaching that team was simple, treat them like we really are on the same team. My job was to guide them, not boss them around, and show that their success was my success and I was really rooting for them. That is the same attitude I will bring to tutoring, that I and the student are on the same team and I am invested and ready to help them succeed.
Thus far I have taken three courses in Anthropology; Physical Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, and ANT 190; A Short History of Nearly Everything. I may have not graduated yet but I can tell you the difference between a hominid, a hominin, and a hominine, whether a skull you hand me is an Anatomically Modern Human, and I can tell you all about the child rearing culture of the Beng people of the Ivory Coast.
I have excelled at reading and writing from a very young age. I received a perfect score on the English section of the SAT. Not only this but I also participate in National Novel Writing Month every November, where participants from all over the country attempt to write a novel of over 50,000 words in under 30 days. I have succeeded once, and attempted a total of four times. Beyond creative writing, I also have experience reading scholarly articles and I have written two detailed research papers, one on the subject of the efficiency of pressure-rocket fuels and the other on American Voter dissatisfaction and alternative voting systems.
History has always been a fascinating subject for me, despite the fact that I do not like how it is often taught as a long series of seemingly disconnected facts. I have taken World History courses at the university and high school level as well as American History. On top of education credentials I often read or look up historical concepts in my spare time.
As for civics and politics, as I mentioned in the Writing section I have actively studied various voting system between countries. Additionally, I have been taking political science classes at the university level and I always, always read the news every day.
If I sounds like the tutor you need, feel free to contact me! I look forward to hearing from you.
