About Mark

I, earned my B.S. and a Masters, both from North Carolina State University (2001 and 2003). I have tutored for 20 years, from starting a tutoring program at a local elementary school to tutoring student athletes in the football program at NC State and basketball program at UNCW, and from tutoring elementary math to AP Calculus. I have taught at New Hanover High School in Wilmington for 4+ years including Pre-Algebra, Math 1, Algebra 1, Honors Algebra 2, Math 3, Precalculus, Honors Discrete Math, and Advanced Placement Calculus AB, with 2 years in its rigorous multi-disciplinary Lyceum Academy.

I've also worked in finance for a combined 10 years for a small entrepreneurial startup and a large pharmaceutical corporation. I use those invaluable experiences in my tutoring to help motivate how math is useful and helpful in careers beyond the classroom. I will also get to know your student's interests and incorporate those into the tutoring sessions to develop rapport and further motivate learning math.

What makes me different from most tutors is that I make learning math fun, interesting and understandable. I utilize Socratic questioning in helping my students learn. My students have often said at the end of an hour that they lost track of time and didn't realize time was already up. I say, "Time flies when you're having fun."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught algebra in several different courses and settings. I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra A (broken into 3 mods), Algebra B, Algebra 1 and Math 1 high school classes, all of which cover an introduction to algebraic concepts.

I have also tutored students in algebra for 15+ years.

My goal in teaching algebra is to help my students think - how to break apart numbers and recompose them, how to make the leap from patterns among specific numbers to generalizations that can be applied to any number. And I have fun doing it, and enjoy most of all sharing that joy with my students, many of whom have not had positive experiences with math before. I am convinced that it is this flipping my students' switch from "I hate math" to "wow, this is kind of interesting" that makes the difference in my tutoring.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra and Algebra 2 in several different courses and settings. I have taught Honors Algebra 2 and Math 3, as well as Pre-Algebra, Algebra A (broken into 3 mods), Algebra B, Algebra 1, Math 1 high school classes, all of which cover algebraic concepts.

I have also tutored students in algebra for 15+ years.

Calculus

I have taught calculus - specifically the Advanced Placement Calculus AB course - in an academically rigorous, multidisciplinary, college prep program for junior and senior high school students.

I have also tutored students at this same level as well as students in Honors Calculus for 15+ years.

I really enjoy calculus and love helping students discover how the concepts they've learned leading up to calculus all come together in this course.

Precalculus

I have taught Precalculus in an academically rigorous, multidisciplinary, college prep program for junior and senior high school students.

I have also tutored students Precalculus for 15+ years.

Trigonometry

I have taught trigonometry in several different courses and levels. I have taught Precalculus, Honors Algebra 2 and Math 3, all of which cover trigonometry.

Precalculus and the Honors Algebra 2 courses were in an academically rigorous, multidisciplinary, college prep program for junior and senior high school students.

Math 3 was in on-level classes, and is the rough equivalent of Algebra 2.

I have tutored students at all levels in trigonometry.

Lastly, I really enjoy trigonometry and love helping students discover the many patterns and relationships inherent in trigonometry.
