About Harmon

I have been a life-long teacher in a variety of positions. I graduated summa cum laude from the undergraduate university I attended and magna cum laude from the post graduate institution from which I graduated with a Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling. I am currently working on my Doctorate degree in Pastoral Counseling. I served as a high school substitute teacher for two years for the Garrett County Board of Education in Maryland in numerous subjects, and I was an Adjunct Instructor for the past two years with Garrett College in the same county. I taught multiple "Communication 101: Public Speaking" courses and also a "First Year Experience" course, which focused on presenting life skills to incoming college freshmen. I developed the syllabi for both courses. I completed the ESL training course through the Cape Fear Literacy Council.

I have excellent teaching skills and am adaptable to work easily with cultural diversity, gender and personality differences. I have extensive cultural experience through my work in Canada, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Israel/Palestine. I had two years of German and one year of French in high school. I had enough credits for a minor in Greek language (Antiquity Studies) in college and one semester of Spanish (2014). I have been taking additional Spanish training through the U.S. Institute of Languages and have basic proficiency in Spanish (2008-2015).

I hold myself to high standards of education and will seek to adapt my tutoring work to the specific and most pressing needs of my students. I look forward to hearing from you and assisting you in developing your skills in the English language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I taught twelve 3.0-credit hour Bible courses for a School of Theology extension campus for a Church from 2012-2014. I also developed and taught Bible course curriculum for a District Church of the Brethren Ministry Training Program (20004-2008).

ESL/ESOL

I have been working with the Miskito Indian people in the village of Kisalaya, located in northeast Nicaragua. I have developed, prepared and taught a selected group of students and have been asked to continue teaching ESL upon my return trips in April and September to multiple classes.

Public Speaking

I was an Adjunct Instructor at Garrett College for Communications 101: Public Speaking for four semesters, two classes each semester. My average teaching score by the college for each class was 4.75 out of 5.00.

Religion

My B.A. degree in Religious Studies from Wright State University included extensive study of world religions, e.g. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Shintoism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, etc. I also had extensive religious training from my Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling from Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, GA, and in my current Doctorate work with the same. I also attended United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, taking numerous courses there. I have additional course work through Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
