My name is Dana. I have taught English in the public schools for four years, and am currently at Laney High School. I have written curriculum for the writing portion of the ACT, and have worked as a proofreader and writing specialist since 2008. My methods are incredibly hands on. Students will be touching, manipulating, and interacting with texts, grammar, and any other area of English.
Having taught, I am well acquainted with the format and question style of the NC standardized tests for English as well as the SAT and ACT. I have experience teaching testing skills as well as English. I have an in-depth understanding of the common core and its standards. I do not offer cookie cutter tutoring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 4 years experience as a high school teacher, and each year I have shown growth on my final exam scores. I have both a bachelor and master's degree in Literature (and my BA includes teaching at a high school level). My success comes from chunking texts and using a variety of instructional methods.
