About Lindsey

My love of teaching comes from my love of learning. I believe that if a student is having trouble with a concept, that it is my job to continually find new ways to present the information until they understand it.

I want to teach my students how to learn and I structure every session around the individual student's needs. I have calm demeanor, an abundance of patience, and, above all, I believe in keeping my students motivated and smiling.

I am a UNCW graduate with a degree in English Literary Studies and a certificate in Professional Writing. I have experience tutoring standardized test prep, working with attention deficit students, teaching English to Chinese students, and with US government and History AP, and English Literature and language AP.

I also have years of experience teaching horseback riding, but whatever the subject, I approach every session the same way: by establishing goals and finding what works best for you. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I specialize in reading, writing, phonics, ESL, and all things English.

I am available evenings and weekends and I can't wait to meet you and get started.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I taught handwriting at Huntington Learning Center. I loved teaching it. I love writing, I am an obsessive note-taker, and I have excellent handwriting and experience at teaching it. I think the traditional three-line handwriting paper setup works best. In addition to my English Bachelor's degree, I have also taken university courses in art, and throughout my academic career I have experience with calligraphy, pen and ink, and painting Chinese characters, so I believe I can claim a level of penmanship mastery. I have also found, in a few cases with some adults I have known, that using a heavier writing utensil slows them down enough to improve their handwriting.

Phonics

I have a bachelor's degree in English and have taken courses studying the language, such as structure of the English language, theory and practice of editing, and analyzing style. I have also studied Spanish and Chinese and have taught English online to Chinese students, so I have experience studying contrasts in phonics and in teaching phonics to people of foreign languages. Phonics was my favorite subject to teach at Huntington Learning Center, although I was surprised to find most tutors and students did not feel the same. I have also completed Adult Literacy Training at the Cape Fear Literacy Council, which relies heavily on phonics. Finally, I have a lifelong love of words. My earliest memory is of trying to read and I love helping others do so.

Study Skills

I have extensive personal experience in study skills, having taken four AP exams, and an SAT subject Test, in addition to the SAT. I have experience tutoring study skills at Huntington Learning Center in a variety of subjects from science to essay writing and grammar. I have also helped friends and family members study and prep for tests from middle school through college with everything from note cards to last minute crash courses in grammar. I think it is important to establish a student's strengths and weaknesses when helping with study skills. Sometimes students need to learn to take notes or keep better track of school papers while others need to practice using key terms and navigating their textbooks.
