Practical sessions with student specified goals : interaction at the airport, train station, hotel, restaurant or asking directions. Years of living abroad and personal travel experience with Air France and TWA make my input rich and varied.
Grammar,

Grammar

I learned a lot about analytical Grammar in European Universities (in France and Germany). I taught comparative English and French Grammar for 19 years. Understanding the technical foundations of sentence structure adds a great deal of meaning to literary works and is very useful in translation work.
Proofreading

Proofreading

For 11 years I worked in an international organization based in Monaco, The Crans Montana Forum. I enjoyed proofreading all sorts of documents, news articles and summaries before they went to the printer's or were put online. Years of teaching also make errors very evident to me immediately.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have taught the 'Worldly Wise' High School vocabulary method with excellent results. Vocabulary enrichment is one of my favorite pastimes and is a lot of fun... And what a wealth of vocabulary the English language presents! Latin root words provide groups of related words stemming from nouns which are then developed into verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Looking up vocabulary words can help you to learn many synonyms and antonyms; so instead of learning ONE word, you are learning many more.

I enjoy helping my students improve their reading and writing skills on texts having to do with current news events. Once this has been prepared, I encourage them to defend their point of view and personal opinions orally, even debating with those of opposite tendencies.

Literature

As a university student, I was passionate about the different schools of literature and how they were affected by the concurrent philosophical and artistic tendencies. Literary analysis adds greatly to our understanding and appreciation of novels, plays and poetry.

Julie, 2 lessons with Mary

Patient with me.

Mary went over greetings- how to communicate on a greeting- We went over the verbs- how to make some sentences with feelings - singular and plural 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person

Paulette, 1 lesson with Mary

Knowledgeable and patient

She has been very helpful reviewing my homework and journals. She is very fluent in French and does a wonderful job of helping with word pronunciations. She is willing to schedule time necessary to prepare for important tests, oral exam prep, etc.

I certainly appreciate the kind comments! I enjoy working with students like you who have prepared work between sessions ! They are sure to progress.

Absolutely amazing!!

Mary is by far one of the best tutors I have ever had. She is very patient and is always willing to help me with what ever I need. She is always looking for different and fun ways to teach French. She tells me about different news site so I can listen to the French news. I don't think I would have been able to pass my French class with out her help.

First session is five stars!

This was our first session and Mary helped me feel at ease with my current level of French (quite low). She is so supportive and encouraging and I look forward to our next meeting! Excellent teacher!

Excellent Tutor!

We're seeing great progress with my daughter's writing and language arts skills -- and we're seeing them much sooner than we expected! Update 1 Dec 14: After getting our daughter's excellent report card and seeing the steady progress she continues to make in the new quarter, we are able to reduce the tutoring to every other week. This will allow her to focus more attention on her upcoming piano recitals and extra-curricular activities. This is a pleasant surprise for us since we didn't expect to see positive results so soon! Update 12 Jan 15: Let me say upfront that Mary is a fantastic tutor! She really connected with our daughter, and the tutoring sessions were something she looked forward to! Our daughter has progressed much further and faster than we anticipated, so we're fortunate to be able to end the tutoring sessions in order to let her devote more time to her music interests and goals through the rest of the school year. When we pick back up with tutoring (likely fall), Mary will be the tutor we'll call!! We can't recommend Mary highly enough!

Kind, patient, and eager to teach

I am not confident in my French abilities, and Mary is very encouraging. She is organized and always has wonderful lessons prepared. I enjoy our time together each week.
