UNC Chapel Hill (Master's)
Hello fellow learners! My method of tutoring is to break down the material into easily understandable chunks that are relevant and interesting to you. After learning the basic pieces, we then tie everything together in light of a "bigger picture" that helps to make concepts easy to remember. I have tutored for over 5 years, and worked with students in high school through college. I work with individuals, or in small groups no larger than 3.
I achieved my Bachelor's in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Evolution, and then jumped right into graduate school, literally. I moved down to NC from NY 3 days after graduation. I achieved my MAT in Secondary Science (Master's in the Art of Teaching) at UNC-Chapel Hill. Throughout both undergrad and grad school, I have tutored students in high school courses, pre-med programs, student-athletes, and students just filling their science credit for their major. In undergrad, I went through a formal tutor training program and received my Level 1 and 2 College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification. This program honed my skills in helping others learn their personal strengths in studying and test-taking, and how to build on those skills in all subjects.
Overall, I honestly believe that unless you enjoy something, it will be very difficult to invest your time and energy into being successful in it. As a tutor, I strive to make the subject matter relevant, engaging, and rigorous enough to keep it challenging. I have helped many students attain the success they sought in a course, and would love to help your student do the same! Hello fellow learners! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Study skills are not just needed in Elementary Ed! Many of my students enter high school with no study skills or efficient habits of organization. With any subject that I tutor, I always stress the importance of organization, efficiency, and find the best way to do things that works for you. Some students will waste hours studying material they already know! Others won't study at all. I help all of my students find a way to keep track of their studies that is easy, productive, and that can be transferred to other areas in their lives. Whether we use a calendar, planner, to-do lists, or just setting goals, all of my students will be able to create and hone a sense of purpose for the session, the course, and their day to day lives.
