In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor botany, because I have worked a Directed Independent Study on two plots in Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve on the UNCW campus. My study included surveys, herb, shrub and tree identification as well as photographing and creating a field guide to the trees of the Preserve. I have also surveyed, documented, prepared specimens, and made a guidebook to the plants and trees of the YWCA outback property in Wilmington. I take field trips to areas where there are rare plants such as the Green Swamp and Carolina Beach State Park. I have completed several college classes in botany.
I hold an M.A. in Environmental Studies with a Concentration in Education. I have worked with students for several years as a substitute teacher full time in all the grades K through 6th. I know and understand the NC Standard Course of Study and have presented numerous lesson plans that teach it. I have taught lesson plans that are geared toward the new Common Core as well. I've completed field work in 5th grade, subbed long term in 2nd grade, worked as a paraprofessional in 1st grade and have tutored other grades for the End of Grade Tests. I've taught numerous classes in 3rd grade, 4th grade and 6th grade. I know teachers' expectations in quality writing and analyzing for all subjects. I have also completed coursework in psychological development of children through the life stages and gear my teaching strategies toward the development level of my students.
I've completed undergraduate biology classes in genetics at UNCW as well as a biotechnology class. I successfully completed a master's level class on genetics. I have a solid background in biology with BS in Biology and strong grade point average. I've worked a DIS in a microbiology lab. My part was to extract DNA from the samples, amplify 16s rDNA by PCR using Anammox specific primers and perform T-RFLP analysis of 16s rRNA genes.
I understand all the sounds of the letters in the alphabet including blends and silent letters. I've been a substitute teacher in the local school system for several years working with students in elementary grades and reading is a main emphasis. I've long-term subbed for second grade teaching phonics and reading as well as fluency. Last spring I worked as a paraprofessional in first grade teaching small groups in phonics (BURST) and reading interventions.
I have completed a college level public speaking class and understand how to create a message, clarify it, organize speaking material, aim the message for an audience, prepare and give the talk. I also understand, know and use anxiety reducing strategies. I have given many PowerPoint presentations and speak regularly in front of classes of students at public school.
I have earned a A.A.S. in Secretarial Science, a B.S. in Biology and an M.A. in Environmental Studies. My current GPA is 3.75. These accomplishments support my claim that I know how to study and successfully complete academic course work. In addition, I have reared 5 children through elementary school teaching and supporting them with study skills that I learned and used for my own successes, such as: planning, time management, focus skills, organization of material, choice-making, review skills, outlining, note-taking, list-making, review strategies and test preparation strategies. I have tutored my children's friends and also used teaching study skills in my substitute teaching practices. For example, I regularly request students to write homework assignments on their homework logs or in their planners.
