About Jessica

Hi there!

I have been a teacher for nine years now. I have tutored during summer breaks as well. I am 32 years old. I have my Master's degree in Teaching Reading, and my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in ESL- English for Speakers of Other Languages. I have taught 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, online classes for ESL, online classes for college freshman, and I currently teach 5th grade. I am also a Reading Foundations Trainer for the NC Department of Public Instruction.

I pride myself on teaching out of the box. I am all about teaching with a theme to engage students' learning. Motivation is key, and I have a system of earning pre-printed cards with learning objectives on them to show students (and parents) mastery of objectives. I use interactive notebooks to record progress, and students' creative application of standards as well through choice board. Students can choose from a pre-determined list in order to show mastery as well. I use a lot of non-fiction passages/topics when teaching because students will need to be proficient in non-fiction (informational) text next year. I have also taught with Read To Achieve passages/testing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been trained as a Reading Foundations Trainer with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. I train other teachers on strategies to use with struggling readers in grades K-6, which are not limited to: phonics, vocabulary, fluency, phonemic awareness, and comprehension. Hands-on methods are used in order to make learning meaningful, systematic, and multi-sensory. We use the Orton-Gillingham methodology. Specifically, one of the units I teach to teachers is on ADD/ADHD. I teach them how to identify signs of students with ADD/ADHD, and how to remediate instruction with students who have signs of, are are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. We also discuss the brain science behind this.
