About Jessica

Whether you need help with reading and writing, directive instruction in grammar, encouragement in taking tests, assistance with research or citation for an academic essay, or simply someone to practice speaking skills with, my goal is to help you achieve your highest potential in English proficiency. I work with students from middle-school through university level, in a variety of aspects of English studies. I am a NC Licensed secondary-school teacher in English and English as a Second Language, and have a Masters Degree in English with a concentration in Literature for Children and Young Adults. I worked for several years in a university Writing Resources Center, and have taught writing at the secondary and university levels. I have also taught English abroad, and worked locally as a volunteer tutor through the public library system. I believe that working one-on-one or in small groups with students provides an opportunity to “meet students where they’re at” and find out how best to help them grow as life-long learners, and lovers of a vibrant and ever-changing language that is used throughout the world. I look forward to working with you!

I also provide editing and proofreading services for writers, and have edited several memoirs, how-to manuscripts, and works of fiction, as well as application materials, personal statements, and business documents.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a licensed high school teacher of English and English as a Second Language; I also have a Master's Degree in English. I am able to tutor multiple aspects of English language arts: reading comprehension, oral communications, vocabulary, grammar and syntax, writing in various genres, literary analysis, test prep, and more.

ESL/ESOL

I am licensed by the NC Department of Public Instruction to teach English as a Second Language at the K-12 level. This licensure is based on receiving a passing score on the Praxis exam for English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Proofreading

While writing processes may be different for each writer, we all want our finished work to be polished and professional. As an experienced teacher and tutor of writers, I can help you bring your writing through to its finished stages. I have edited personal memoirs, doctoral dissertations, and research papers in a variety of disciplines. I am willing to proofread and edit for you, or to teach you strategies to improve your own editing skills, depending on your personal goals as a writer.

Study Skills

I have over 5 years experience as a teacher and tutor, and have taught a specific study skills course at the college level. Part of teaching includes helping students develop effective study skills; it's not always about the subject at hand, but the way one goes about learning about that subject, that makes a difference. Organization, structure, accountability, and personalized learning strategies are the most important study skills any student can incorporate.

Writing

As an experienced teacher and tutor of writers, I've learned that a flexible and adaptable approach to writing is the key to success. Writing encompasses many genres, audiences, and styles, and each person brings his or her own approach to the writing process. Whether you are writing a poem, a Senior Exit Project research paper, a college or job application essay, a lab report or a doctoral dissertation, I will help you to produce effective, polished writing that you can be confident in.
