I am a chemical engineer by profession and education. The last ten years of my career were as the president of a chemical corporation. I retired early and became involved in education. I have taught four plus years of all levels of high school mathematics-Algebra I and II, Geometry, Mathematical Functions, Precalculus, and Calculus. Now that I no longer teach, I have become involved in tutoring. My schedule is quite flexible.
Mathematics has been a joy and passion of mine. I could also call it a hobby. It was an essential part of my career and I have tried to impart to students the importance of mathematics in their future. Tutoring to me is fun. My reward is seeing a student having that "Aha!" moment when they grasp a concept. Some of my students disliked mathematics and now enjoy it. I hope to inspire more students in the joy of mathematics.
I graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. My wife is also a graduate of the same university. We have two grown sons. We are members of Immaculate Conception Church. My hobbies include fly fishing, running, golf, astronomy, and of course mathematics. Kind of geeky, but I collect rare old mathematics books. Jon was fabulous! He is easy to talk with and makes math a easy to understand! He is very patient and understanding, since calculus can sometimes be a frustrating topic to work through!
Jon went over and above to help my son. He really seemed to really know the subject. He was also very encouraging and patient. He was extremely flexible with scheduling. Very pleased!
My daughter was very impressed at how much Jon helped her understand her work. I loved that she had to do the work herself and check the answers - actual learning! She's very much looking forward to more lessons. Thanks Jon.
Jon tutored me for the GRE, more specifically with the quantitative portion. We met every week for a few months, and he was excellent. He is very knowledgeable and great at explaining the math problems. He seemed to be very flexible with his schedule. I would definitely recommend him to others.
My daughter felt the session was very helpful and Jon did a great job explaining things to her. We would hire him again! He also got back to us quickly so she waa able to complete her assignment on time.
Jon helped me understand many math topics that I didn't understand initially. He knows exactly what he is doing and will help with any topic in math. He is very patient and kind, and he makes sure you know how to do the math.
Jon helped with some stats problems, standard deviations, and z problems. He was easy to follow with clear explanations.
My first session with Jon went really well and I am looking forward to the next one. Jon seems to be very knowledgeable about GRE Math and he is very personable and encouraging. I have not taken Math courses in a long time and Math is not my strong suit, but I feel pretty confident that Jon will be able to teach even me the skills necessary for the GRE.
Jon shared with my son a very comprehensive way to tackle his math problems.
My son left the session feeling a lot more optimistic about conquering math in the upcoming SAT's.
We relate on running. He is helping prep for the math SAT in October. I hope my score improves. Thank you.
Math, geometry, algebra and the formulas. I learned the formulas and how to apply them. Also I received a lot of help with the greater than less than equations.
Reviewed complicated pre-calculus and algebra problems for an exam. Learned how to complete many problems that I didn't know before. Would definitely recommend!
Jon has been tutoring me for my NCEL math subtest that I need to pass to become a licensed elementary teacher. He is such a patient, understanding and kind teacher. I would recommend him to anyone! He will definitely be able to help you out with your math needs.
Jon is a patient and enthusiastic teacher who clearly loves math. Looking forward to continuing our sessions for the summer :)
Mr. Jon is helping me with the GMAT. Because of his awesome teaching I will go into the GMAT test with confidence! Highly recommended!
First tutoring session was great! Jon is very knowledgeable and helpful. Answered all my questions and explained clearly. Look forward to working with him this semester!
Jon was great from the start. He is flexible and a very patient instructor. My daughter was in a class where she did not understand the teaching method of the teacher. Jon was able to help her improve her grade and be more confident in Math. Highly recommend Jon.
Jon is an excellent tutor! I worked with him for about three weeks, (only once or twice each week) and my GMAT score increased 70 points!! Jon is very patient and knows lots of tips and tricks for the test. He taught me that the test is not solely an intelligence test but simply a puzzle. He taught me how to answer the questions correctly and quickly. There are many quick tricks to the test and Jon knows them all! I HIGHLY recommend working with him if you are planning on taking the GMAT!! He is a lifesaver.
Mr. M has been an invaluable math resource for my son. My son's greatest challenge in school is math. Since working with Mr. M his grades have progressively improved throughout the year. The improvement not only impacted his math grade but I truly believe the confidence he gained spilled over to all subjects. The change in his attitude and confidence since working with Mr. M has been huge. I look forward to him working with my son for as long as he will have him. He's excellent!
Jon made the difference for my daughter. She was taking an online Math class and he helped her go from a potential failing grade to a B for the class and a A for the final. He is always available to his students and takes a genuine interest in them. If my daughter ever gets into another jam I know my first call will be to Jon. I can not thank him enough.
Jon is so positive and encouraging and teaches math in a way that brings out the best in my son. He's gone from hating to loving math!
My son says Jon is a great teacher. He is genuinely interested in helping his students learn, and explains in a way that is easy to understand. We are very pleased.
Jon is a great teacher. I would have loved to have a staff of teachers like him when I was a principal.
I am very happy with my son's first tutoring lesson. He had lots of notes and he enjoyed the experience with the tutor. I am very pleased with the amount of work that Jon covered.
Jon has been very patient with tutoring my son. He relates well and makes it easy to learn for the student.
After talking with many tutors for help in my math class, I felt Jon answered all my questions honestly and I knew just from out initial talk he was knowledgeable in the subject. He was always able to be flexible with my schedule and often times fit me in when I had last minute problems or questions before a test. I went from a low C in the class to an A within just 4 weeks! If I ever needed another tutor, Jon would be my first call!
Jon is a great tutor. He helped me get through my stats class, I thought I would never make it through! He made everything much easier to understand and put the math problems into a perspective I could identify and comprehend. He also adds humor to the session which is great because I absolutely hate math! I would highly recommend him.
Jon was a great tutor. I took the GRE too many times before deciding I needed to do something different, and found Jon M. on this website.
I took the GRE on 9/30/13 and got a 147 (29th percentile). I needed to get my score above the 50th percentile in less than a month to retake the exam on 10/28/13. I was sick of studying on my own and emailed Jon about a week after I took the GRE in September. We really only had 3 weeks to schedule meetings, but he was very flexible and scheduled me right away. I think we only had about 5 meetings (1 hr each, give or take). During our meetings, we went through all the GRE topics I had the most trouble with. Jon was patient on days I was feeling "brain-dead" and worked on problems with me regardless of my off-days. On my own time, I did some extra problems, but nothing too substantial. It was Jon's explanations and working together on problems that did the trick.
My score jumped up 7 points to a 154 (57th percentile). Very pleased with my tutoring sessions and success on the GRE!
I highly recommend Jon! My son recently transferred to a new High school which is far ahead in what they have covered in Honors Pre-Calculus. Jon quickly responded to my request and set up a tutoring session for the next day. My son likes him and feels that they will be able to catch up and save his grade. He is always quick to respond and we plan to use his services at least 3 times a week! 5 stars all across the board!
After all these lessons, my son is slowly gaining the confidence to be able to do homework and get it!! John has been patient, encourages and praises my son after each lesson. Great flexibility and when there is a test will take time if longer to help my son go through the steps and finally understand each concept.
Jon is very patient and my son has gained a lot from his time tutoring. Jon also was very helpful as we were making a decision about High School math coursework.
I am a non traditional student returning I college after 22 years. Jon patiently worked through chemistry problems with me yesterday. I am so relieved to have someone to help me through math and science his semester!
If you are looking for a tutor Jon is wonderful. My daughter who is in college communicates with him via text and they are arrange the meeting time when she needs his assistance. He is very flexible and accommodating. He has really helped my daughter learn some key information she was missing to make her successful with Math.
Jon is prompt with returning calls/emails/texts and is very flexible with scheduling sessions. This was my first session with Jon as he is helping me prepare for the quantitative portion of an upcoming GMAT exam. You can tell from the very beginning that he has a genuine love for the subject and his teaching style is easy to understand as he takes his time to thoroughly explain.
I have to admit that I was a bit reluctant to use Wyzant to find a tutor, but after my first session with Jon this afternoon, there is no doubt in my mind that this is a legit company. I am kicking myself for not contacting him sooner for my previous math courses.
I told 5 people about him on my commute home. I feel like its my duty to refer my friends who have children in need of math tutoring or themselves with college studies.
Something quite ironic is that he taught me formulas and how to solve problems which I thought were arbitrary, but when I started a GMAT practice test this evening, there were questions using the same methods to solve them. He is very knowledgeable and I feel comfortable under his teaching.
You will not be disappointed!!
My daughter was very pleased with the AP Statistics tutoring she received from Jon M. Jon is very personable yet professional. He worked with us regarding time constraints. He comes prepared and makes good use of the lesson time. We have never used a tutoring service before. Our experience has been very positive. My daughter and I both highly recommend Jon M.
Jon was a great tutor who was patient with me and understood the material very well. He worked with me from the beginning to end of class. He was flexible with his schedule to help me with test days and exams. Thanks to his help I did very well in my class.
John is an extremely helpful tutor. He tutored me in math to help me prepare for the GRE. I hadn't studied math in 5 years, and John taught me simple strategies that helped me understand how to do the problems. He is very encouraging and made me feel like I was learning quickly and would do well on the test. He has a very flexible schedule, and will meet at a location and time that is convenient for you. He even went out of his way to text me and ask if I wanted to be tutored on certain days he was available. He takes your financial situation into consideration and is a very kind and understanding person. He definitely made me feel much more confident in my math skills and I would recommend him to any one looking for a smart, kind, and flexible tutor.
Jon did an awesome job tutoring me through an advanced statistics course related to my doctoral program in education. I ended the course with a 91% ("B"+ for this course). I would not have been able to do that well on my own - and I know: I have taken several statistics courses for college degrees and this is my highest grade to date.
Jon has been an excellent tutor to my son. He quickly responds to my texts and it is easy to set up sessions. Everything I read in Jon's reviews has been true. My son relates well to him and his grades have improved greatly since he has been working with Jon. He has been a god send and an invaluable asset to my son's education.
I feel lucky to have found Jon! With my GRE exam swiftly approaching, Jon was able to provide practice, explanations and support that I was failing to get from studying on my own out of the book. He was dedicated to my success and found time on short notice to fit me in. He had a way of explaining complex GRE level problems to me, a person who has not taken a math class since 2002. I am/was way out of practice, and Jon helped bring me up to speed. The morning of the test I felt well prepared and significantly more confident. From a practice test I had taken prior to starting tutoring with Jon to my final GRE Quantitative Reasoning score, I saw an 15 point increase. I would HIGHLY recommend Jon's tutoring services! Thanks Jon!
Jon M tutored my son in honors high school pre-calculus. After the first few weeks of high school classes my son's average in honors pre-calculus was a "D". That is when we contacted Jon to tutor our son in our home. Jon was very personable and easily related to my son. My son was instantly comfortable working with Jon. Jon made sure my son had a clear understanding of the math concepts before moving on to the next topic. Jon is very patient, professional, extremely knowledgeable and punctual. By the end of the semester my son's average was a "B". We were very pleased with the results and plan to contact Jon in the future when our younger children start high school. Thanks Jon!
Jon M. has been a fantastic tutor for my teenage son. He is a very intelligent tutor who is extremely knowledgeable in the area of math. He always shows up on time, and is extremely flexible with scheduling. In addition, he quickly figures out the learning style of your student and uses this particular style to get your student back on track. I can't say enough on how generous this man is of both his time and concern for your child. We are so happy we found him.
I just used Jon 2 times so far, but I was very pleased that he got back with me so quick & He helped my daughter right away. She said he liked his method of teaching & he was very patient with her. His rates were reasonable and he also came to our house which helped me out alot. He is highly recommended!
Wow, did I ever strike the jackpot by finding Mr. Jon M. In high school, I really struggled with math and have always been afraid to help my kids with their math homework. As a 38-year-old mom who's been at home with her kids for years, I have decided to go back to college for nursing. I had to take a college placement test and did awful in the math portion. In fact, I was told I needed a full year of developmental courses. I was also told I could retake the test in 30-days. That's when I found Jon. He made everything easy to understand and fun! I now even have a math problem work book just because I am starting to enjoy these!
I retook my exam two weeks ago, and I did it! I went from a full year of development math before taking College Algebra straight to College Algebra. I'm thrilled beyond words. But even more than this, I found a new love for math. I may not ever be a natural at this, but I do know now that I CAN learn with lots of practice.
The first words that come to my mind are THANK YOU! I am a single mom who got hit by the economy hard and has to re-invent myself due to my chosen career going by the wayside. Therefore, I enrolled myself back in college to start a new degree, new career and Algebra was going to be the downfall of all my plans if I did not pass! After I had done and re-done an assignment over and over until I realized I had done the same problem over seven times and still could not understand the work and therefore could not pass it, I decided to find a tutor. I found Jon who was prompt in responding to me and quick to set up a time to meet in order to help me get through this very stressful assignment. We were able to set up a time within days of my contacting him. When we sat down to go over what I needed to know, he was very patient with me and made me feel at ease. Jon's approach to the assignment was straight- forward and thorough; the algebra problems didn't feel as they were such an enormous task as they did when he walked in the door. When we were finished with my first lesson, I felt as if I would be able to move forward in my studies by myself and was not so intimidated by the work ahead of me. I would highly recommend Jon to anyone who is having problems understanding math. My only wish is that I had contacted him sooner! So, as I said in the beginning, Thank you Jon!
p.s. - I PASSED THE TEST THE DAY WE HAD OUR FIRST LESSON!!!!
I found Mr. M. in desperation. I was taking a Math class that I had to have in order to get my degree, unfortunately for me not only did I hate Math I had created a learning block. When I found Mr. M. and enlisted his tutoring services I was not only failing the class but I was considering dropping the class. I hung in there at his suggestion and not only did I pass the class I brought my grade up from a "F" to a "B". I would have never thought it was a possibility. Mr. M. really took his time to help and even went above and beyond the call of duty. I have to take a statistics class next semester and I will definitely be enlisting his services again. I would recommend him to anyone. Thanks so much Mr. M.
When I started my search for a statistics tutor I prayed for someone who would be patient, knowledgeable, wise, honest, and friendly. After my initial tutoring session with Jon I realized he was an answer to my prayer. During our sessions he knew how to relate to my learning style as he explained new concepts and formulas. Additionally, Jon prepared quick tips and lessons that I could take home and refer back to when I was completing homework. This information was extremely beneficial to me since I had not taking a statistics course in over nine years. I gained a wealth of knowledge while working with him and I successfully passed my statistics course. I highly recommend Jon to students of any age. He is a skillful mathematics tutor that will diligently work alongside you to ensure your success.
Very good at listening to assess what the student is having trouble with in the lesson. He makes learning fun, easy to get along with and not intimidating to the student. Makes the student feel successful in the skills they already know and gives them the confidence to acquire new skills. Thanks Jon!
It was apparent in the first few minutes of working with Jon that he is very passionate about math. We reviewed many of the basic concepts I had forgotten and he was very patient and never made me feel like I was stupid for not remembering these things. The lesson went well and once I got back doing it. I realized I can do this stuff. He is a great teacher and I look forward to working with on more advanced math concept.
Jon has been an amazing tutor. His love of math is motivated and inspired to help reach achievable goals. He is reliable and prepared using aids and lessons that turns on the light bulb! He has been easily available and reaches out beyond the lesson, to ensure the material is understood. His tutoring has exceeded my expectations.
My son throughly enjoyed his session with Jon. In fact, he has been passing on Jon's " Algebra 2 tips" to his friends. Comment from my son: "He clarified all the algebra concepts I struggled with for the entire year in two hours." Thank you Jon!
Mr. Jon is a wonderful tutor, he is always available to extend his services. Very easy to understand math concepts after tutor session complete. If I get stumped on a problem I can email him and he helps me out. I would highly recommend him for tutoring because he genuinely cares if you learn the material and doesn't get frustrated while teaching you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
