University of North Carolina, Wilmington (BS Marine Biology)
After graduating 3rd in my class with honors at Cape Hatteras Secondary School in 1998, I received a Bachelor of Science degree from the UNCW Marine Biology program in 2002 with a minor in Studio Art where my focus was Ceramics and Sculpture. I have received NAUI & PADI SCUBA certification spent over a hundred hours volunteering at the NC Aquarium at Ft Fisher in the Animal Husbandry and Senior Dive program. Since graduating I've pursued many endeavors in the arts which continue to keep my skills honed and practical.
Coming from Cape Hatteras, my ties to the ocean have remained very tight and allowed me to achieve the status as a Professional Surfer, Competition Judge, and Surfing Coach, a director for UNCW's Marine Quest Camps for Teens, a Surfboard Shaper, and most recently as a Director & Developer for the highly prestigious WB Surf Camp. I am a published author and have had articles published in both Eastern Surf Magazine and Local Sessions Magazine.
On top of all this I am a full time musician and recording artist. I perform regularly both regionally and nationally, and record out of my home studio. In the past I've taught private guitar lessons out of my home and continue performing and teaching school groups regularly with the Soko African Drum & Dance Ensemble. I have performed the bagpipes solo and with the Port City Pipes and Drums for 7 years at many various events from funerals to weddings to anniversaries. For the past year I have also been invited to work with North Star Post Sound at Screen Gems film studio as a recording engineer for One Tree Hill.
During the 7 years since I've finished my time at UNCW I worked for 5 years with Life, Inc as a mentor and case manager for both kids and adults with developmental and behavioral disabilities, volunteered as a leader with Christian Surfers US as an event coordinator, and continue to volunteer with Port City Community church in their Refuge ministry, music and video production teams.
I work extremely well with kids of all ages and typically connect very quickly with them on their level. I have an immaculately clean background and can provide as many references as you'd like. I look forward to working with you and your family. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
