I am a 20+ year, retired, veteran, New York City public school teacher who has relocated to North Carolina. I've taught in both Catholic and Public schools. In addition, I've tutored children in cases where many parents felt their child was not getting enough academic support at school. My experience ranges from general Classroom Teacher to Reading Specialist and includes knowledge in all of the elementary general subjects including Reading, Writing, Phonics, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Formerly a Reading specialist, I am an outstanding Reading tutor because I am attuned to assessing a child's needs and then tailoring my sessions to meet those needs. Tutoring sessions are not a "one size fits all" job. Every child is different and when you learn their strengths, weaknesses, and motivations you are best able to make a difference in a child's learning.
My experience as a Reading Specialist in addition to my experience tutoring adults with English as a Second Language has provided me with the background knowledge to teach phonics to all grade and learning levels.
For some teaching is just a career. For me, teaching is my talent. I have always sought the opportunity to help people achieve more. I look forward to that opportunity to help you do the same. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 20 years experience working in education with grades from Pre - k to High School with the bulk of my experience being in the elementary grades. I am a licensed teacher in New York City who has continued as a substitute teacher after my retirement. This has allowed me to keep current with the latest educational practices such as teaching the Common Core standards as well as continuing to work in a field I love of helping children achieve.
As an elementary school teacher for over 20 years, I have taught students of various skill levels. The primary subjects I have taught include Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I have also been responsible for assisting students with their science and social studies projects.
In addition to my experience as a classroom teacher I have also worked as a reading specialist. As a specialist, I recognize the value of various methods of learning to read from the youngest student to adults learning English as a second language. I am especially attuned to shifting my methods in order to best suit my student(s).
