In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked in education as a teachers assistant for 17 years. 8 of those years I worked with special needs students with various disabilities. Those students have ranged from pre-K to high school (ages 3-22). I have 4 years working was in a Life Skills classroom responsible for 3-7 children at one time, teaching in small groups or individual. All 8 years in Special Education, I also substituted for the teacher in her absence. I have had students with Downs Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, ADD, & Aspergers. I am currently enrolled in college majoring in psychology & special education.
