About Lucy

I am a successful English Composition instructor for college freshmen at a public research university in North Carolina. I have experience teaching both introductory and research based composition courses. The typical sequence of a Fall semester English composition course will include instruction in the principles of rhetoric and an overview of the basic modes of writing including narrative and expository prose. The Spring semester composition course includes instruction in basic principles for research based writing. Instruction is given on documentation of sources using the MLA, APA, and CMS style guides. I teach students the importance of understanding writing for their specific audience, principles of proper use of tone and style, as well as revision, editing and proofreading techniques.

Additionally, I have taught courses in intermediate and advanced college reading as well as in academic study skills. Understanding how to read for main idea(s) and specific content increase student overall comprehension of material as well as their critical thinking skills useful in all areas of both (their) academic and professional pursuits as well as prepare them for taking standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, MAT, and GRE. I have a Bachelor's degree in Humanities and a Master's degree in English concentrating in Technical and Professional Communication as well as a graduate certificate in Teaching English in the Two-Year College. My teaching experience includes instructor of Language Arts for sixth grade students in a rural North Carolina Public School, instructor for Foundations of College Writing, Research Based Composition, Developmental Writing (also termed Remedial or Basic Writing), and tutoring experience in Basic Skills assisting students preparing to take the GED test. I have extensive experience working both one-on-one with students as a writing consultant ( writing tutor) and electronically through a university online writing center (OWL); therefore, I am highly capable of working with students within a variety of settings to help improve their skills in both reading and writing. Many of my past students have remarked favorably about my amiable nature and willingness to spend additional time with them in order to meet their goals and answer their questions, and this past summer, I was a nominee for the First Year Staff Advocacy award within the university where I was instructor during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
