About Sandra

Every learner is different. To be sure my students learn, I identify their learning styles as part of the tutoring experience. I have been working this way and ensuring student success for 25 years as classroom teacher and tutor in elementary school, high school, and community college.

I am a licensed secondary teacher with specialties in English, reading, vocabulary development, and writing for both native speakers and English language learners.

My own success in school and at UCLA, where I spent long hours in the library and graduated with a 3.94 GPA, has fired my lifelong certainty that hard work and practice yield deep understanding of the subject, good grades, and a love of learning.

I work hard to pass this love of learning along to my students. I couple that love with directed teaching and daily practice to help students want to learn, so they can improve their grades and test scores. Again and again, I have seen students flourish and achieve as they begin to value hard work and experience its link with success in school.

Because my students’ success is my goal and my motivation, I regularly ask them or their parents for input about the effectiveness of the lesson. I use these responses to tailor my instruction to the needs of my students.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I am flexible. I do offer make up classes if classes are cancelled soon enough.

I offer individual and group tutoring in my quiet, comfortable in-home office. I also travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you work to attain success in school!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a high school English teacher, I taught students strategies for success on the ACT English test, the ACT Reading test, the SAT Reading test, and the SAT Writing test. I can quickly identify the specific challenges these tests present to any student. I can guide my students to increase their understanding of the subject area and/or their test-taking skills and speed.

ACT Reading

I have taught reading at all levels for 25 years and can help my students with vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and text analysis. In addition, as a high school English teacher, I taught students strategies for success on the ACT reading test. I can quickly identify the specific challenges this test presents to any student and individualize tutoring to increase a student's understanding of the subject area and/or test-taking skills and speed.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a teacher, I have developed skills that help me reach any student at any level in any subject matter. Most recently, I worked as a teaching assistant in a K-6 elementary school where I successfully tutored fifth and sixth students in all subject areas, helping them increase their EOG tests. I can help any student achieve his or her goals.

English

I taught every English course in the high school curriculum as well as English and English and Reading Comprehension in community college for 25 years. I know (and love) the subject areas well. I am able to work with all students at all levels because I use many strategies to engage students and raise their understanding and achievement.

Grammar

When I taught Developmental English in community college, I learned how to teach and re-teach grammar. Most of my students had received no formal grammar training, so I learned how to make grammar accessible and sometimes fun. I know grammar and like it because it is fun the way puzzles are fun.

Proofreading

Errors jump off the page for me, and I can help my students spot them quickly as well. In college, I worked as city editor on my school newspaper, which was published by the Journalism Department. Much of the work was proofreading and copyediting work. Later, when I sponsored the high school newspaper, I taught students to proofread. I also taught proofreading as a part of the writing process in all of my English classes.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking in high school and in adult school in Los Angeles. In addition, students in all of my English classes had to give at least one speech a semester. I taught them the fundamentals of crafting a speech which would engage an audience. I also taught them the fundamentals of effectively delivering a speech.

Reading

I am trained and experienced in reading strategies, most of which I learned when I taught developmental reading. I can help my students engage with the reading material, grasp its content, recall it, apply it to new situations, analyze it, and use it in daily life.

I teach my students how to connect images with words, to help re-activate the image-making functions in their brains. This ability to see the content with the inner eye has been compromised greatly by the rapid rate at which images are supplied by electronic media to our brains. This makes our brains lazy, but when this function is recharged, meaning through images, they are again connected to the written word. Reading, not just seeing and calling words in one's mind, is the result.

SAT Reading

I am a reading specialist. As a high school English teacher, I taught students strategies for success on the SAT Reading test. I can quickly identify the specific challenges this test presents to any student and individualize tutoring to increase a student's understanding of the subject area and/or test-taking skills and speed.

SAT Writing

I have taught and tutored every high school level of writing from developmental to AP. I am well prepared to help you analyze prompts, develop a thesis statement, organize your proof, write your essay, and still have time to proofread your response.

Writing

In addition to teaching and tutoring writing for 26 years, I am a published author. Writing a book required me to use all I knew about writing (and learn more) in order to be successful. Now, when I tutor students in writing, I draw on years of both teaching AND writing experience, and my students benefit.
