Hi, my name is Jerri. My goal is to encourage learning for each student by making it fun and involving each student in the learning process. People learn in many different ways, therefore; my tutoring methods will vary with each individual. I seek to find the way each student learns best. By helping each one realize their own potential, not only will their confidence improve so will their willingness and ability to learn.
All the subjects I currently tutor are personally enjoyable; and because I do enjoy them, this carries over into my tutoring sessions. The subjects I have chosen are subjects I excelled in while in school. I am continuing with my own education to remain "fresh" on many subjects. I am currently working on becoming certified with the Sonday program along with the Orton Gillingham approach for reading, spelling, and writing. I am one class short of a two year degree in Business Administration and I am pursuing an education in teaching. I assign homework so that I may be able to provide assessments and progress reports.
I encourage feedback from each parent and child. I am flexible with time. I request cancellations be done in a reasonable amount of time, however; I understand that emergencies do come up. I do offer make-up classes.
I prefer to meet at the library. Not only is it quiet but it also has many resources and encourages each student to use these resources not only for academic learning but for learning things of interest.
I look forward to helping you and your child reach your goals and achieve success. Hi, my name is Jerri. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Bible study is an ongoing study. There are many resources where one can get answers. Helping someone find answers in the bible is a reward in itself. I currently attend church on a regular basis and have for some time. I am also a christian with a hunger for the Word of God. I have been given a desire to help others. I also have a certificate for lay chaplain at a local hospital along with being a coach through an online agency for those needing spiritual help with everyday questions. I answer these questions with scripture from the Bible. Every question we have about life is in the Bible. I can incorporate a bible study for the individual concerning what they want to study.
Grammar is a subject I excelled in in school. I continue to keep myself fresh on the subject. It is also something I am mindful of when communicating with others.
Proofreading is important. I have written some things and upon rereading them have needed to make some changes. Some things would read differently than what I intended or could have been written better. Many times, misunderstandings have come from someone not proofreading their writing. I often find myself asking others to read what I have written because they could make suggestions on how it could be better. I would like to provide proofreading as a way to help you as well.
Reading became fun for me in the 6th grade. I read a book that grabbed my interest so much that I had a hard time putting it down. Since then I have searched for things to read. When I do find a book, I generally read it as often as possible because I am fascinated with stories. I enjoy helping others become passionate about reading as well.
I will complete a training on tutoring reading with the Augustine Literacy Project on July 25, 2014. I am excited about the materials and information I have already received. This information will be used to pinpoint where the student is having difficulty and allow the student to have greater success early on by teaching them spelling rules.
I will also be taking refresher courses throughout the year to ensure I will continue learning as well.
I have always enjoyed spelling. I have become involved with a program with the Augustine Literacy Project which focuses on spelling rules and learning to read. These rules give students the tools to become successful readers by learning to spell words and recognize sounds. I am excited at the wealth of information being provided and how I will be able to help students more.
Vocabulary is taken for granted if one isn't aware of differences in many words that are used for the same meaning. I didn't realize until some years ago the difference in some words. For example, demand is to forcefully ask for something, as a child would. Command, is to speak forcefully and having the authority to do so. Once I learned this I began to take notice of words and if they were used correctly.
I am currently taking a writing course to become published. I began my interest in writing late in life. I didn't have the confidence in myself while in school. Once I realized I could do it, my love for it grew. Writing for myself and for others is not only fun, it's exciting.
