Bio

Officially, I've taught Composition I & II, Professional Writing, and Literature at Southwestern Community College. I've also taught high school and volunteered two years to teach illiterate adults how to read. Unofficially, I've taught my whole life. I have always loved to acquire knowledge and consider myself quite eclectic, with interests in a vast range of subjects. As much as I've enjoyed gaining understanding, I've equally enjoyed transferring knowledge and sharing my education. I've been informally tutoring friends and acquaintances since I can remember, and I continue to do so. No matter what kind of setting I am in with my student(s), I value being candid, reaching a comfort level that relieves inhibitions, and attaining a balance between a serious commitment to learning, reaching each student's individual goals, and an informal relationship that places a high value on humor. having fun, and personal fulfillment.
My first goal when I meet a potential student is to learn about you and to discover how YOU learn best:
visual, tactile, auditory, or other. I continue to find that first insight about process to be rewarding for both my students and myself. My students have confided that this realization has aided them in other classes and future endeavors.

My formal education has been in English (Literature with a focus on Creative Writing). However, I also used my time at University to take challenging classes in a variety of other majors, as well as read voraciously about anything I found interest or value in. I have always been an autodidact with eclectic interests, in addition to my traditional education: I feel as comfortable with mythology, logic, math, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies as I do with my own major.
I have also spent a great deal of time traveling and immersing myself in other cultures. I attended Oxford for the last semester of undergraduate studies, backpacked Europe and several Central American countries on more than one occasion, and attended classes for teaching English as a Second Language in Costa Rica. Classrooms are effective and valuable settings for education; however, they are not the only settings conducive to the acquisition of knowledge and understanding.

My schedule is fairly flexible and I am willing to work with you on a schedule; I am also open to assisting with a subject outside of my major and helping those embarking on any unknown field of study. I've tutored all ages and feel comfortable with children, young adults, and more mature returning students entering a new field or continuing their prior education. Please contact me to set an appointment; I encourage a first meeting (which you will not be charged for) to discuss the assistance you are looking for, the specific goals you want to reach, and to decide whether I can help you meet those goals.
