About Alan

Last year I retired from 20 years of teaching at the college level, where I taught earth science, geology, chemistry, ecology, environmental science and geography. I also taught two years of high school math and did my student teaching in third grade. My course evaluations have always been excellent and have won a number of teaching awards. Mid-course evaluations are important in my work to be sure I am track with my students. I regularly ask for feedback.

I can teach a variety of subjects and frequently integrate them to show students their relationships. I am a world traveler, having been to 35 countries, some of which I visited on cycling tours of one to four weeks. These enter the classroom discussions. Even in the classroom, I frequently have worked one on one with my students. I especially enjoy when they visit me in my office to discuss class problems, which also gives us the opportunity to get to know each other. Besides teaching, I visit various high schools to provide tutoring for students taking advanced placement exams as well as to grade the free response questions students write for the AP environmental science exam. In addition, I am also a certified yoga instructor.

I will meet tutoring students at their homes or a neutral spot, whichever is most convenient for the student logistically as well as educationally. My goal has always been to encourage students to live up to their potential as well as to give everything of myself to this venture. I love to teach because I love to learn and I expect to learn every bit as much from you as you will from me. I hope to hear from you so I can help you succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
