Formerly an elementary school teacher but more recently a homeschooling mom, I have more than 25 years of teaching experience. Having taught all grades in K-12, I have a unique perspective on the significance of various skills.
My style is relaxed and my formerly frustrated students respond positively to this. I want my students to understand math not just memorize how to do it for a test. I use manipulatives to help them "see" math and supplement with games to help them master the facts that they must be competent in to do math with ease. I encourage the disciplines of math which lead to long term success. I can help my students get their homework done and prepare for tests or go back and find the holes in their math foundations that need to be addressed in order for them to truly be successful in math for the long term.
I have always loved math and have refreshed myself on college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus as part of my teacher re-certification requirements. I've coached my five home schooled children through all 12 years of math, and for the last 8 years have had the pleasure of working as a math tutor with elementary through college age students. I especially enjoy working with students who are particularly challenged or frustrated by math.
I am generally available for tutoring from 1:00-5:00 pm and prefer to tutor at the public library or at my home. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to not only succeed at but also enjoy math. Gave helpful and informative tips on what my son can start doing to improve right away. My son loves working with her. She is kind, knowledgeable, and punctual. So happy to have found her!
Denise was a great tutor and helped me succeed in College Algebra. She was knowledgeable, professional but most of all, able to teach mathematical concepts in a format I could understand. Thanks to Denise I have a greater appreciation and understanding for College Algebra. I could not have made it through the course without her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a new tutor with WyzAnt, but have been a homeschool teacher for 26 years and a private math tutor for the past 8. I loved algebra as a student and enjoy helping my students find the same pleasure I do. My study buddy style is effective and helpful for students who stress out about math.
As a homeschooling mom and tutor for the past 8 years, I have worked through Algebra 2 several times with my own kids and several other students. I've enjoyed being a study buddy with them to keep my skills fresh.
As a homeschooling mom with certification in elementary education, I've had lots of daily, hands on experience helping my six students through elementary math. In addition, I've tutored a numbered of students from public and private schools in my hometown. I have a relaxed, kid friendly style, but it gets the job done. I like to use manipulatives and games to give understanding and solidify math skills.
I'm a former hater of high school geometry who has come to enjoy the subject very much as I've worked through it with my own homeschooled kids and several public and private school students. My most recent experience was with two students last year (2015). I have a study buddy style which all my students have responded to very positively.
In my 26 years of teaching and 8 years of tutoring, I've had the pleasure of helping a number of students with this introduction to algebra. I've been able to remove the fear factor and help them develop good problem solving skills and work habits.
This year I've worked alongside my homeschooled son as his precalculus "classmate." I've enjoyed refreshing my skills and helping him whenever he got stuck. My fascination with all things math continues to grow as does my understanding behind the skills.
I've recently completed trigonometry for the third time as I've worked alongside my homeschooled son this year to refresh my skills. Trig is a fascinating class with many useful applications. My study partner style is unintimidating and has worked well with all my former tutoring students.
