About Heather

I have a B.A. in Elementary Education as well as an M. Ed. in Curriculum Design and Instruction: Creative Arts and Learning, from Lesley University. Additionally, I bring experience as a technology instructor, children's theater arts writer/director/consultant/scenic artist, and as a Zumba Kids instructor, as well. As of May 11, 2016, I will have completed the final exam needed for the North Carolina Department of Public Education to transfer my Massachusetts Teacher's License to North Carolina for Grades K-6.

While raising my own two teenagers, I have served as a substitute teacher in the Moore County Public Schools as well as at The O'Neal School since my move to NC. I have worked with students from the Pre-K level all the way through Grade Eight, including children with exceptional needs. As a capable instructor, I am on the requested list for several teachers, when coverage is needed. I have a reputation of engaging successfully with the students, and for being able to successfully communicate the material in the lesson plans.

One thing that I love about tutoring above classroom teaching, is that it gives me a chance to get to know a student really well, and to be able to tailor my teaching to meet his/her individual needs. I believe that students' learning styles are varied and that their strengths can be capitalized on to bolster those areas that require extra focus.

I like to use a variety of hands-on, visual, and listening activities to enhance and scaffold reading, writing, and math, helping visual and kinesthetic learners to process content. I also believe in integrating arts and music to stimulate parts of the brain that just can't be reached in another way.

When teaching basic mathematics, I try to use my creative side to approach what can sometimes be a dry or intimidating subject for some students. Use of games, manipulatives, and music are some tools that I use.

Science is a passion of mine, especially the study of the environment and living organisms. I love to get into hands-on projects with regard to this subject matter, and help students to immerse themselves in the content. This subject area naturally lends itself to demonstrating learned content in a variety of ways, both written, visual, aural, and kinesthetic.

I have excellent writing skills, founded on a clear understanding of word morphology, phonology and phonetics, and of the other structural rules, such as punctuation and correct grammar, applied to constructing written language.

I have been a calligrapher for more than 30 years, and have a passion for teaching hand-writing. This skill along with my art expertise helps me to help students learn to draw the letters. I have also been researching various methods to help students with grip issues that affect their writing.

I love to help students grow and achieve their goals. I hope that I may be of service to you, and look forward to hearing from you to schedule your first lesson.

Best regards!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have been a mostly self-taught artist for over 30 years, working in drawing and painting, with particular expertise in calligraphy, pen and watercolor pencil drawing, scenic painting for theater. I have professional experience in all of these areas. I was the graphic artist for the training catalog at a multi-million dollar technology company. I have ten years of scenic painting experience, and have produced commissioned artworks for various business and personal projects.

Elementary (K-6th)

I studied for and received my BA in Elementary Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1992, and received my MA Teachers License in 1994. Following that, I received my M.Ed. from Lesley University in Curriculum Design: Creative Arts and Learning. At that time, I renewed my certification. I have been an instructor in a primary school, as well as a one-on-one aide with elementary students. I have just completed my last exam to transfer my license to North Carolina, and expect to receive it within the next several months.

Handwriting

Besides education, I also have a background in art, and have been a calligrapher for more than 30 years. I can help students practice handwriting as a function of drawing, by practicing lines, curves, loops, visual spacing. Also, I can work with students to increase hand strength with exercises to improve grip and endurance.

Painting

Phonics

Phonics is a great strategy for learning to read words and written text. I can help young readers learn to isolate phonemic sounds, and learn to string sounds together to make words, and words to make sentences. I can teach students to identify words by breaking them down into smaller parts (e.g., sounds and syllables). I can help older students identify word meaning through understanding of roots, suffixes, and prefixes, as well as strengthening the connection between the letters and sounds.

Theatre

I have co-written and directed several plays for children, aged 7 to 13, and have helped run several summer theater camps for middle-school-aged children. I have 10 years experience in professional scenic painting, and have also participated as a volunteer in building set props. I also have over ten years experience as a stage actor, singer, and dancer in school and community theater productions, and am well versed in activities to help develop self confidence in the young performer.
