U.S. Air Force Academy (Bachelor of Science in Humanities)
Graduate Institute of St. John's College in Santa Fe (Master's)
Hi! I love helping people, which is why I've chosen to be a tutor. Whether it's elementary-school-aged children learning the fundamentals, high school students preparing to take their ACTs, SATs or a class test, or adults who are working on a degree, I love being the person to help them learn new material and achieve their goals.
I was in the U.S. Air Force, where I worked as a Public Affairs Officer for six years. During my time in the military, and in years prior during high school and the U.S. Air Force Academy, I tutored my coworkers and peers on a wide range of topics. I have lots of experience in writing/English, but I also enjoy math and science and other subjects. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Humanities and my Master's degree in Liberal Arts, so I'm well versed in the full spectrum of academics. I'm excited about being a tutor and having the opportunity to teach others and help them overcome any struggles they have in the classroom.
I do have a cancellation policy of four hours, but I am happy to reschedule lessons in order to meet students' needs.
I am willing to travel in and around the local area (Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, etc.) in order to meet students in an agreed-upon setting.
While I can tutor students in a wide-range of areas, I enjoy problem-solving and that's what I love about math. I've studied math for many years (to include post-calculus classes) and have been tutoring my peers throughout all my classes. I work very hard to find ways to break down the concepts and explain the problem-solving process in understandable terms.
If you are looking for a tutor who is patient, kind and easy to work with, then I'm the tutor for you. Please contact me so we can set up a lesson! Hi! She is amazing and so wonderful with my son! Very patient, she helps with his homework, provides a lot of instruction that he understands, and is helping him read. So grateful we found her!
We have been using Laura for the past year, and she has really worked hard with our son. He has had some challenges with reading. Laura started at the beginning helping him associate sounds with letters and sounding each word out. She really is an amazing teacher.
She went over each SAT problem 1 by 1 and was very patient teaching my daughter the concepts. We intend to meet weekly!
Laura helped my daughter structure a schedule necessary to meet her goal. She also explained how to complete an assignment.
Laura tutored English Literature AP content which included Syllogism, Sardonic vs. Sarcastic, parallel structure, periodic sentence, and deductive reasoning. She included examples with each subject which aided our daughter to grasp the content she was teaching.
We appreciate how Laura understands what our daughters needs that we discussed are, and she begins tutoring with what she assessed as her immediate needs were after that. She came prepared.
Laura helped our daughter feel more self assured and knowledgeable for taking her next exam in AP English Literature.
We as parents would recommend her to other parents for their child's tutoring needs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have always had strong problem-solving and reasoning skills, which have helped me succeed in all areas of study, especially mathematics. I also enjoy solving logic puzzles. I took the LSAT, a logic and reasoning test, on a whim and scored a 92%. My strong communication abilities allow to me explain reasoning process to others, which helps them comprehend how to reach the solution.
As a Public Affairs Officer in the U.S. Air Force I have had six years of real-world experience involving daily public speaking. Whether it was holding meetings with my 20-person staff, briefing the base commander about important issues or addressing media members in a press conference, I have accumulated hundreds if not thousands of hours of experience in this area. In addition to this, I have received official military training on giving speeches and interviews and, in turn, I have provided that training to many military members. I would consider myself an expert in this area and very well qualified to be a tutor for a student in need of public speaking assistance.
