I am the mother of 5 and grandmother of 12. Experiences with my own family and teaching for 20 years have proven that every child can learn to read. I have been trained in Reading Recovery, which specializes in helping delayed readers. I have taught many students in small groups as well as one-on-one. I know that children need many aspects of literacy such as writing, phonics and comprehension strategies to succeed academically.
In addition to Reading Recovery, I hold a Master's degree in Reading/Literacy, and have achieved National Board for Teaching Standards in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood certification. I love to read and I want to share that love with children so that they may become lifelong readers and learners. There are so many wonderful, funny, and exciting books for children to read that learning to read can be so much fun; it does not have to be hard work if the appropriate stories are chosen that reflect the individual student's interests! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
