About Jennifer

I am currently a junior attending North Carolina State University. I am majoring in English with a teaching certification and plan to become a high school English teacher upon graduation. I also love to study history, which is why literature happens to be one of my favorite subjects. I have my Associates in Arts from Wake Tech Community College. I live in Sanford but I drive to Raleigh everyday for school so I am pretty flexible location wise. As far as hobbies and interests, I love to read and I dream of traveling. I have two dogs and two cats and have a huge heart for animals. I am also a youth leader at my church and minister to girls in 10-12th grades. I look forward to helping your child not only succeed but discover a passion for learning.

Enough about me, here are some qualities and qualifications that make me a great choice for your tutoring needs. I have a passion to teach, but in a progressive manner. I try to make even the most boring subject matter hands on and fun.

Writing is a subject that a lot of students dread simply because it intimidates them. By taking the time to tackle the issues that most students struggle with, such as structure and organization, I can help students retain knowledge that will follow them throughout their academic careers. Reading comprehension is another struggle for many students. Focus is difficult when you are not interested in the subject matter. Depending on the student and their interests, I try to come up with innovative ways to encourage not just reading but comprehension through questions and action. Sometimes applying material to real-life situations that a student can relate to can be a huge help as well.

I've studied the Bible and literature (American and British) and have excelled in all areas. Again, I find that applying Biblical situations to real-life situations can help a student learn the material; much how Jesus taught in parables. I teach the Bible weekly to my youth group and use social issues that are relevant in their lives to convey the message we are teaching from the Bible. I have been a youth leader for going on four years now.

Regarding Public Speaking, I currently hold a position that has required me to facilitate meetings and propose ideas, and with also having taken a public speaking course at Wake Tech, I am pretty proficient in the subject. Public Speaking is more than just giving a speech, it also applies many of the writing tools that students are required to learn as well as research, organization and visual aids.

I would love to engage with you in a laid-back environment and not just teach the material, but lead you to learn the material. The more you learn something, the more questions you will have, and this is a good thing! This evokes the desire to learn, which is so much more than just an education. I hope to be the one that helps you gain understanding in the subject area so that you will actually enjoy and look forward to class.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I am a proficient reader with the ability to analyze sentence/word structure and meaning. I am also proficient in reading comprehension.
