Hi, I'm John! I studied biochemistry and math during college but discovered a passion for programming R through my undergraduate research. During my PhD in biomedical engineering, I became an expert in R programming as I used R constantly to organize, analyze, and visualize data. I also have experience helping others learn. I tutored other college students for my college's tutoring center during multiple semesters of college, was a graduate teaching assistant for two classes, and taught R and Github workshops during graduate school. I want to help you be successful at whatever you are doing and to enjoy R programming as much as I do!

I have over 6 years of R programming experience that includes developing R packages and teaching R workshops. I developed two Bioconductor R packages during my bioinformatics-focused PhD which have been published in scientific journal articles. In addition to knowing the R language, I also have experience applying R to analyze big datasets and creating informative, good-looking plots for presentations and papers.

I can teach you the ins and outs of R, from basic to expert. I know programming can be intimidating when you are getting started. If you are new to R, I will be encouraging and focus on helping you gain a better understanding of foundational ideas and practical aspects of R. If you have some experience already, I can help you take your skills to the next level. I have a lot of experience with topics like visualization with ggplot, working with big data using the data.table package, and working with data using tidyverse packages. We can also talk about using R for statistics and machine learning. I can walk you through a topic in R that you are interested in or review your code to suggest improvements and answer questions. I am here to help you so our lesson will be flexible and tailored to meet your goals.

I am a patient and supportive instructor, whatever your knowledge level. Contact me about lessons so I can help you progress on your R programming journey!

I completed a PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of Virginia. During my time there, I created novel computational methods to understand gene regulation and applied them in the context of cancer epigenetics. I have over six years of experience using R programming for biomedical research. I developed the COCOA and MIRA Bioconductor R packages to analyze epigenetic data, which are both described in published papers.

John is fantastic tutor!

John is a really wonderful tutor. We have had a few sessions now working on a project. I feel confident in my project being correct, but I’m also learning a great deal. John is always helpful and willing to explain concepts. He’s also very patient, no matter how many times I’m stumped, stuck, or asking a ton of questions!

First session

John gave me an overview of R basics including types of vectors, how to access values in a vector, how to create objects, how to check documentation for functions, and several other topics. He also he also explained some statistics including the normal distribution, testing for difference in means, Z scores, and the central limit theorem. He’s very knowledgeable and a great teacher.

Great Tutor

He’s thorough and tries to prepare before the session. Even within he’s the same and helps to explain things to those who aren’t as well versed in the programming language.

John is a knowledgable and professional tutor

John taught me how to run regressions for large databases on R. He helped me to understand the code by breaking it down into manageable chunks of information. You can tell he is very knowledgable and experienced with R. I appreciated his ability to teach in an understandable way and his patience.
