About Nicholas

Teaching and tutoring have always been things that I enjoy. Even when I studied for my own classes, I would always study in groups and would help teach others concepts I had already cemented in my brain. My first official teaching position was as a Teacher's Assistant at Kalamazoo College in General Chemistry my senior year at Kalamazoo College. I was given a group of 10 students and ran a review/homework session once a week. This job was very fun and I was able to help students really understand the basics of chemistry. I really enjoy taking difficult concepts and rewording or rephrasing them so that anyone can understand them. My goal in tutoring is always to find the language that best works for the student, and use that to bring them to full understanding.

Since March 2015, I have been tutoring exclusively. The lion's share of my work was as a tutor at Mally ACT in West Bloomfield, Michigan. They are a State renowned ACT/SAT/AP and subject tutoring company. At Mally ACT, I was able to fully master the Math and Science sections of the ACT, as well as getting a jump on the math section of the new SAT test. I am very comfortable with all high school math, chemistry and physics through AP. My master's degree is in Inorganic Chemistry, so I can help with any undergraduate chemistry course, Freshman and Sophomore level in college physics (Newtonian Mechanics, Electromagnetism and Modern (Einsteinian) physics) and Math through Calculus 4.

I was 1 class short of a Math Minor. I have taken Calculus 1, 2, 3 and 4 (linear algebra) as well as Differential Equations. I am an expert in the ACT math section and can cover everything in the new SAT math section.

I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. This means if we have a lesson scheduled and you cancel it within 24 hours of the start time, I will still charge for 1 hour as a cancellation fee.

If you are interested in my services in any way, please feel free to contact me. I am flexible, friendly, easy to talk to and excited to help you with your tutoring needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been tutoring the ACT for over 2 years now and have guided many students to higher scores. I have curated the best resources and techniques to help demystify and simplify this test.

ACT Math

I have tutored ACT test prep for over two years now. I was one class short of a math minor in college and have enjoyed learning and teaching math my entire life. I have a wealth of experience with standardized math tests that my students benefit greatly from.

ACT Science

I have two years of experience tutoring the Science ACT. I have brought students from the low 20s to within range of a perfect 36. I have easy strategies and can convey how to do well on this test easily to students.

Algebra 1

In undergraduate studies, I was one class short of a Math minor. I spent most of my full time working schedule in 2015 tutoring math and science for high school students. This included Algebra I and all of the algebra basics. I can watch a student do problems and easily see where they go wrong and how best to fix their methods.

Algebra 2

I was 1 class short of a math minor in college and had to learn and use a broad range on math getting my degrees in chemistry. I have spent a lot of time with conics (parabolas, cirlces, etc.) and the rest of the Algebra II curriculum tutoring both this class directly along with tutoring math for the ACT, SAT and GRE.

Chemistry

I have two degrees in Chemistry (Master's and Bachelor's) and have mastered chemistry at a high level. Chemistry was the focus on my academic career and I have many different ways to explain the concepts to students, so that they can better understand them. I have experience as a teaching assistant and a tutor working with students to do better in chemistry.

Cooking

I have been cooking since I was in middle school. I have no formal education, but I have been absorbing cooking knowledge and cooking myself for about 15 years. To offer a benchmark for my abilities, I completely catered my brother's wedding. This included a multiple course rehearsal dinner along with the main menu to feed more than 100 on the day of the wedding. I have a solid set of skills that would benefit any home cook improve their everyday cooking.

Ear Training

I received a Minor in Vocal Performance from Kalamazoo College and have many accolades as a vocalist. I mostly sing barbershop quartet music, which requires a high level of ear training in order to tune chords in real time. I can teach Solfege or numbering systems in order to better navigate scales.

Football

I played football from 9 years old through my senior year of high school. I was captain of my JV and Varsity team in high school and played on both sides of the ball. I was always a lineman, so I can teach blocking and block shedding techniques very well. I can also go through all of the fundamentals and help someone better their game.

Geometry

Between my high level of math coursework and many chemistry classes, I've had to work with many complex and interesting geometric problems. I have also tutored geometry students for the last 2 years.

GRE

I have been test prep tutoring for over two years now full-time. I did very well on the GRE when I took it and have since helped many students do much better on this exam. Standardized tests take a very specific mindset to do well on them, and I can show students how to approach these tests in a better way.

Music Theory

I received a Minor in vocal performance from Kalamazoo College, and music theory was part of that curriculum. Between my formal training and years of singing barbershop quartet music, I have acquired an intimate knowledge of music theory and how it applies to what is heard. I can teach students on the entire spectrum, someone who absolutely cannot read music, all the way to a beginner arranger who is trying to deepen their theory knowledge.

Prealgebra

In undergraduate studies in chemistry at Kalamazoo College, I was just 1 class short of a math minor. I have had to learn very difficult math, but in recent years have been focusing mostly on the fundamentals with high school and middle school students. I have tutored a lot for ACT and SAT and those maths all rely fully on a flawless prealgebra base, so I have had to find and fix any algebra errors that arise in the process.

Precalculus

I was only 1 class short of a math minor and have been tutoring high school math for over a year now full-time. This class has some subjects that confuse students quite a bit. I have methods that make the subjects much easier to understand.

SAT Math

I have studied the new version of this test ever since it came out and have worked with many students, helping them master this section. I was only 1 class short of a math minor, so I have a deep knowledge of difficult math.

Sight Singing

I have a vocal music Minor and have been singing and sight reading for at least 16 years. I know both fixed do and movable do systems. I can also teach a numbered system, if that is preferred. I use scales and ear training to help with learning sight singing.

Voice (Music)

I have a vocal performance Minor and an entire life of singing experience. I have studied vocal pedagogy and have many method to identify and relieve stress in vocal production. Vowel shaping, posture, support, voice placement and tuning are among the concepts I excel in teaching.
