I am varied in my approach to teaching depending on the situation.
I taught College Reading classes for which I have received excellent peer, supervisory and student feedback. Additional duties included coordinating and supervising the student tutors. I have taught science in the GED programs for the prison system of North Carolina, German conversation at a local manufacturing company, and taught/tutored English as a Second Language—specifically for the workplace—in community colleges in five counties in North Carolina.
In South Korea, I taught English as a Foreign Language with students ranging from five years old to retirement age.
I have studied such courses as Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology and Teaching Reading in the Content Areas. I am varied in my approach to teaching depending on the situation.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received training and certification in Laubach literacy as well as Orton-Gillingham method. Laubach is a phonics-based series method developed specifically to help adults with limited or no reading skills. The Orton Gillingham approach is avisual, auditory and kinesthetic, and phonics based method that teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings.
I taught English as a Second Language, Limited English Proficient, and GED for Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, NC, 1992. In Taejon, South Korea, 1993-1995, I taught English as a Foreign Language for all age children and adults in a variety of settings including junior college and city government. I taught English as a Second Language students in basic reading, writing, and math for McDowell Technical Community College, Morganton, NC, 1995-1997.

As a teacher, public speaking has been very important to me, and I required public presentations of my students. As an undergraduate, I had the classes. I headed the Interpersonal Skills committee for my workplace, and I emceed for our Campus Life Taskforce. I have given many public speeches and performances.
My undergraduate degree is in socials studies, which includes sociology. I have taught study skills specifically for undergraduate sociology classes. I have customized the individualized study course for sociology to go from quarter to semester format. My post-graduate study includes Human Geography (similar to sociology). I have lived in other cultures.
In teaching Developmental Education, study skills remains an essential ingredient. I have also specifically taught the class (ACA 115) Student Success and Study Skills. I co-taught (POL 120) American Government and (SOC 210) Sociology, emphasizing study skills specific to each course.
I studied theatre for a semester in London, England, attending performances of several plays in the West End and analyzing performances for class. I received the “Best Actor” for my role in FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. I have done community theatre. I have performed at our local Poetry Slam.
