About Karen

I love to watch my students learn and know that I have made an impact upon their learning. I have taught for a number of years at various grade levels. Most of my experience is at the lower elementary level but I am also comfortable with upper elementary. In addition, I have taught adults at the local community college. I enjoy tutoring because I can work one on one with a student and find their learning style and what they need to help them succeed.

I completed my graduate degree in the last five years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My degree is in Education with a concentration in Literacy Studies and Certification as Reading Specialist K-12. I desire to work with students in reading, language arts, writing, grammar, math (lower elementary level), science and social studies. I do have experience tutoring. For the last several years, I have tutored several elementary students in reading and math. I have certainly enjoyed tutoring and would give those I have worked with as references. One such student I have worked with for the last two or so years has shown remarkable progress and continues to do well with her reading. My goal is not only to move students forward in a subject but to build their confidence, which I believe is an essential element of learning.

Grammar, Proofreading, Reading, Vocabulary, Writing, Math (lower elementary)

I look forward to hearing from you and what tutoring needs your student may have. I would love to have the opportunity to get to know your child first, then find out where the learning needs are and how they need to be addressed. Then we can move on from there to help your student learn and be successful.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a current Certification in North Carolina and Virginia for the following grades and subjects:
K-6
6-9 Language Arts
PreK
K-12 Reading Specialist

These certifications are issued through each state's Department of Education.

I also have taught in the area of K-6th for 10+ years. In addition, I have tutored students K-6 over the past 10 years.

Handwriting

Handwriting was a part of the elementary education programs when I was in undergraduate school. I also have taught handwriting at the kindergarten level for more than five years and for more than 5 years at the PreK level. I have also taught cursive handwriting to upper elementary student just not as long as the younger students.

Phonics

When I was working on my graduate degree my research included phonics and phonemic awareness. In addition, I taught phonics as a kindergarten teacher and a 1st grade teacher. I have also used it in the upper grades, with adult learners and in my tutoring. I used phonics to teach my own child to read.

Reading

My graduate degree in Literacy Studies makes me qualified to tutor reading. I am certified by the State of NC as a Reading Specialist because of my degree but I also have experience teaching students reading. I have taught struggling reader and beginning reader for years now.

Social Studies

As a fourth and fifth grade teacher I had to teach social studies. When teaching fourth grade social studies as one of three subject I specifically taught. North Carolina History and Virginia Studies. I really enjoy teaching social studies and find myself digging deeper to learn more to share with my students.

Vocabulary

My qualification for vocabulary goes along with my graduate degree in Literacy Studies. In addition, I am certified as a Reading Specialist K-12 . Vocabulary is an important part of reading instruction. I have done this for many years now.

Writing

Writing is a component of Literacy Studies which is what my graduate degree is and I am certified as a Reading Specialist K-12. Reading and writing go hand in hand, to be a go read you need to be a good writer and vice versa. I enjoy teaching writing just like I enjoy teaching reading.

Experienced, patient tutor.

Karen is an experienced patient teacher/tutor. She instantly connected with my son and incorporated his interests into the lesson. We need middle school level homeschool support in language arts. I am very impressed with Karen's ability to connect with the individual child and get the work done!
