My name is Tavia C. and I am an instructor at D. L. McMichael High School in Mayodan, NC. I entered the teaching profession as a Lateral Entry Teacher. I am currently working towards my Master's in Secondary Education. This is my first year teaching however my love and passion for learning allows me to convey material to students in a way that keeps them engaged and asking questions. Although I teach high school, I tutor all levels and age groups. I have tutored students in elementary math, middle school math and science and high school science. I am not limited to any math or science subject that a student needs to be helped with.
A little of my background is as follows. I received my Bachelor's degree in Biology from Shaw University. I completed courses in Biology which included Biology for science majors, Biochemistry, Vertebrate Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Molecular Cell Biology and Biochemistry. I took Chemistry courses in analytical, Biochemistry, and Organic Chemistry and I completed two Physics courses. I completed math courses being just one math course short of a minor in math. I took Algebra, Statistics, Calculus I and II, and differential equations.
Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I entered the world of industry. I worked for LabCorp as a lab technician. I worked in allergy department testing blood samples for allergens. I also worked in toxicology doing drug testing. This opportunity allowed me apply the knowledge that I attained in my undergraduate studies. I have completed internships in a lab setting with the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I also worked as a chemical lab analyst for Dan Chem Technologies.
I treat all my students as my own. I want to see them do well and I will do as much as I can to help them succeed. My tutoring style incorporates a lot of different parts. I like to do hands-on things such as using manipulatives. I like to incorporate pictographs/diagrams. I also do like a teacher would in the classroom. I tutor in a one-on-one lecture format. Now how much of these things are done depends on the student. This is why it is important for me to really get to know the students I tutor. I plan the lesson around how the student learns. I appeal to their learning style.
My goal is to build the student's confidence. The problem I find is that students believe that they can't do it. My job is to show them they can and I give them tools to help them sort their thoughts, techniques to remember important formulas, and strategies to solve various problems. Particularly with Chemistry or Math, I also give students practice sets because with these subjects practice is key. The giving of practice problems for outside of the tutoring session is primarily in the summer when students won't have classwork/homework to do. During the school year, I don't assign problems, but we do work homework/classwork that was assigned and depending on the time allowed for session we practice together.
If you are looking for someone that is passionate about teaching, who really wants to see the student grow and succeed, and is willing to use innovative approaches to achieve that success then I am the tutor for you. Inbox me so I can help the next young man/young woman achieve their full potential.
