About Zack

I have been playing guitar for 14 years. It is my passion! I want to help beginners set themselves up for success by building a solid foundation upon which you can develop a balanced and robust skill set.

My personal areas of expertise are in blues and funk music. I can also teach within a variety of genres including classic rock, pop, country, and reggae. I love improvisation. If you want to learn to play better-improvised solos, I can definitely help you.

My experience - I have played in a few jazz, funk, and blues bands and ensembles over the years. I took music courses all through high school and college and have a music theory education. I play at open mic nights in town whenever I can. I jam relentlessly! I am always striving to get better, myself. I have taught several friends and family members to play in the past few years.

What I can teach - chords and chord changes, posture and positioning, tuning, writing and reading tabs and music staff, fingering/strumming techniques, how to learn songs, scales and modes, improvisation and soloing, playing by ear, harmonizing, how to play rhythm vs. lead,

My approach is to first gauge your experience level, then talk about your goals. I want to know where you are at and where you want to go. If you are just getting started, we will take a generic approach, first covering proper form, posture, and positioning, then moving onto learning the basic chords and strumming techniques. I have a variety of popular songs that are a great method for learning how to deal with chord changes and for learning to play in time. Eventually, we can talk about theory and get into scales and modes. My goal in taking a generic approach will be to provide you the resources you need to keep learning even when you are not with me. I will give you plenty to practice outside of our sessions!

On the other hand, if you are a bit more experienced and have specific goals in mind, I am happy to help you hone in on particular skills and techniques.

I look forward to jamming with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
