About Michael

I attended the University of North Carolina Asheville, where I graduated and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013. My concentration was drawing, but I am experienced in painting and other Fine Art mediums as well. As an upper classman, I enjoyed helping newer students develop their artistic styles and strengths by sharing things I'd learned during my time as an artist. In addition to my studies, I was also involved with the local art community in Asheville. I worked as the S. Tucker Cooke Art Gallery Assistant, and was Treasurer for the university's art club. I received the Art Leadership Award, The Coburn Scholarship, and was an Undergraduate Research participant.

My approach to tutoring is to first, have fun - art should be an expressive and fun creative experience. I like to teach the fundamentals: composition, the color wheel, shading, blind contour drawing, measuring, image breakdown, etc. Lesson plans revolve around individual student interests and areas on which they'd like to work. I aim to create a relaxed and judgement free environment conducive to experimenting with technique and new ideas.

My current rate is $50/hour, and I can generally work around your schedule. Feel free to contact me for more details or with any questions.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you develop your passion for art. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
