Background:

Tutoring has been passion of mine for over 5 years. I'm great at taking complicated concepts and reintroducing them in more palatable forms. I love being able to draw from everyday real-world examples to better convey physics and mathematics concepts to students. I worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for the Student Success Centers at both the University of South Carolina and the University of North Florida for a combined total of 3 years. I was responsible for organizing three weekly 50-minute sessions of various collaborative learning activities to help students best understand the material at hand.
Additionally, I interned as a teaching assistant at Stanton College Preparatory School where I gave AP and IB Physics lectures at one of the top-ranked magnet schools in the country.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude at the University of North Florida with a B.S. in Physics and a concentration in Astrophysics. At UNF I received the 2019 Outstanding Graduate award for my work as the Tutor Coordinator in Physics department and Supplemental Instruction involvement. I am currently a Physics PhD student, new to the triangle area, and I’m very excited to continue tutoring here and to help new students realize their academic potential while having fun in the process.

Methods:

I believe it's important for students to not simply memorize the steps for solving problems but understand the process, as understanding sticks with students for far longer than memorization. In my tutoring sessions I strive to make sure students understand the material and can apply what they know with problems that are slightly different from what they've seen before. I make it a point to weave in pieces of theory and give background that help reinforce the methodology by providing a deeper rationale.
In regards to Standardized Test Prep, I focus on giving students the tools to approach test-taking with confidence. Content is important, but I also make sure to help students develop a strategy that can get them moving in the right d

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have 2 years of experience tutoring high school students in algebra. I like to focus on helping students to identify the specific type of problem they are looking at and compartmentalize their approach in systematic steps. With algebra, I also like to use various real world examples to help students better understand the numbers as well as realize the usefulness of what they're learning.

Calculus,

Calculus

I've been a calculus tutor for 5 years. I also have experience as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for calculus where I facilitated some group study sessions and some one on one study sessions for college calculus students. With mathematics, I like to help students with a systematic approach to solving problems coupled with an understanding for why each step is necessary.
Geometry,

Geometry

I've tutored students in geometry for over 5 years, including students in Honors Geometry courses. I also recognize the importance of providing visuals, especially in geometry, for students who benefit from seeing content presented in multiple ways. Furthermore, I have experience with group tutoring for geometry and in applying collaborative learning techniques to make the material more palatable and fun for students.
Physics,

Physics

I've tutored both algebra-based and calculus-based physics for 5 years. I also have experience as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for calculus-based physics where I facilitated some group study sessions and some one on one study sessions for college physics students. I like to teach students to look for key words in physics problems that help them to identify which equation(s) to use as well as what assumptions are necessary to start the problem. Furthermore, I like to encourage an understanding of the material rather than a memorization of steps.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I've been tutoring SAT math for the past year and am very familiar with the exam. I scored a 790 on my own SAT Math test. As an SAT tutor I like to highlight the consistencies between similar types of problems that are found on the exam and introduce a systematic method for solving those types of problems.

Fantastic Experience

Kenya came to the lesson prepared and helped my son more in one hour than I believed possible. Just one tutoring session gave him confidence that he hasn’t had in ages. We immediately scheduled more sessions with her.

Melissa, 3 lessons with Kenya

Very helpful and responsive!

Kenya is helping my son with Physics. After the first session he sounded so much more confident than he has all semester. I highly recommend Kenya!

Wonderful Tutor

Kenya is a wonderful tutor. My daughter loved the session with her and she also learned a lot from her. My daughter said Kenya is very patient, respectful, and knowledgeable about the topic. I am booking the 2nd session with her and would strongly recommend her to others.

Math Honors

Kenya was extremely responsive and quickly put my teen at ease! She earned a A on her first quiz after just one session. We are please with the process and look forward to the next session.

Relatable, kind, and brilliant!

This is a mom writing the review for my HS senior. With the way scheduluing works, she had been away from Math for a full year. Returning to Math 4, she found that she was rusty on many of the concepts and was struggling. With working with Kenya just one time, she just earned a 96 on her most recent quiz! We will be continuing through the semester to keep things in a happy direction. Thank you Kenya!!

Fantastic tutor

First 2 lessons went very well. Kenya is very kind & patient and gets straight to the point with transforming complex assignments in a simple way so my daughter can understand it. Explained very clearly and helped her rebuilding her confidence - very pleased:-)

Daniela, 2 lessons with Kenya

She is remarkable!

Kenya worked with my daughter on a honor physics final review packet. She is patience, flexible and knowledgable! Thank you! We hope to use her again for SAT Prep this summer!

Joanne, 3 lessons with Kenya

Great!

Super organized and punctual! I took the GRE this week and I felt prepared for the quantitative section thanks to Kenya!

Tanner, 6 lessons with Kenya

Awesome!

It was a real pleasure working with Kenya. She was so accommodating and patient! We have worked with many tutors over the years and we enjoyed the experience. More importantly, Kenya was very flexible and knowledgeable.
