About William

I am a patient, dedicated, and flexible tutor with recent experience in a wide range of math subjects. These subjects from Math II and III (algebra II, trig, and geometry) to quantitative literacy, statistics and probability, and business/finance math. I am also very strong in English/composition tutoring, though there seems to be less demand for this subject. I also do some tutoring in biology and chemistry (currently high school, non-AP level only). I can also tutor intro/AP psychology and many philosophy courses.

I have a diverse range of teaching and tutoring experience at both the high school and college levels. I currently teach SAT test prep courses in Raleigh. Before moving to Raleigh, I taught two college courses at Indiana University as a graduate student. These were interdisciplinary courses with an emphasis on philosophical analysis, discussion, and writing. I received the Cognitive Science Program's Outstanding Teaching Award in 2015 and completed a graduate-level course on teaching methods in 2011. Before attending graduate school, I taught high school physics and chemistry from 2003-2006 at Woodside International School, a small private high school in San Francisco. I also taught and tutored math (mostly algebra) during my time at Woodside.

Overall, I enjoy teaching but prefer working with students individually because the communication is so much more straightforward in a one-on-one setting. I first began tutoring in 2002, which is what led to my high school teaching job, but I continued tutoring while I was teaching at Woodside and also did some tutoring while in graduate school, mostly between 2008 and 2010. I returned to tutoring alongside my test prep teaching in 2015 and have enjoyed working with the students I have met through WyzAnt.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have in-person and online tutoring experience with the ACT (all sections). I scored a 35 on the ACT English section and a 35 overall. In addition, I have years' worth of writing and editing experience and scored in the 98th percentile on the verbal section of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam). I can help you with the content of the ACT English section as well with ACT-specific strategies to help you improve your score.

ACT Math

I have in-person and online tutoring experience with the ACT (all sections). I scored a 35 on the ACT Math section and a 35 overall. In addition, I have years' worth of math tutoring experience, from Algebra 1 to precalculus and statistics. I can tutor you in terms of both the subject matter as well as in ACT-specific strategies that will help you increase your score.

ACT Reading

I have tutored students in all sections of the ACT and have co-taught an online ACT prep class for another company. I know the test well and have recent scores of 35 (99.5th percentile) on all four sections of the test. One of my recent students raised her score from a 30 to a 34.

ACT Science

I have tutored students in all sections of the ACT and have co-taught an online ACT prep class for another company. I know the test well and have recent scores of 35 (99.5th percentile) on all four sections of the test. One of my recent students raised her score from a 30 to a 34.

I also have several years' worth of high school teaching experience and extensive experience with test prep teaching and tutoring.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I to high school and junior high students and have also tutored many students in this subject.

Algebra 2

As a high school teacher, I taught Algebra II for one year. I have also tutored many students in this subject. I am currently tutoring students in Common Core Math II and Math III and have also recently tutored private school students in Algebra II/Trig.

Biology

I majored in biology (Bachelor of Science) as an undergraduate at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I graduated in the top ten percent in my class. I have also tutored several high school students in biology.

Chemistry

I taught high school chemistry from 2003-2006, before entering graduate school. I completed the equivalent of a chemistry minor at UNC-Chapel Hill while getting a bachelor's degree in biology.

English

I have taught two writing-intensive courses at the college level (both at Indiana University). I also teach an SAT Reading/Writing course at a local tutoring agency. In addition, I have years' worth of experience as a writer and copy editor. Finally, I scored a 730 (98th percentile) on the GRE Verbal section and a 6 out of 6 on the GRE Analytical Writing section.

Geometry

I have also tutored dozens of students in geometry, either as a standalone subject, as part of Common Core Math II and Math III, or in the context of standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, or GRE). I can help you with the more algebraic material (problems involving triangles, circles, parallelograms, etc.) as well as with the more logical/reasoning-based material, including proofs and conditionals.

GRE

I have both individual tutoring and classroom teaching experience with the GRE. I have helped multiple students increase their scores on both the math and verbal sections. Prior to attending graduate school, I created and followed my own study plan for the GRE and scored in the 98th percentile on the verbal section (720 out of 800) and the 90th percentile in the math section (790 out of 800), along with a 6 out of 6 on the essay. The format and scoring have obviously changed somewhat since then, but all of my teaching and tutoring has involved the current version of the test.

Note: I can lower my hourly rate for sessions lasting longer 90 minutes or for students who can meet inside the beltline in Raleigh.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar (primarily electric) for 25 years. In my teaching, I focus on ear training, scales/modes, and movable scale and chord shapes. I can also figure out songs and guitar solos (classic rock, punk/indie, country, folk, etc.) by ear and teach you how to play them. Finally, I can help you with basic approaches to lead guitar and improvisation in a rock-type setting.

I would not be your best bet if you are looking for someone to teach you classical guitar, flamenco, finger-picking, or shredding/extreme metal -- as much as I appreciate all of these genres -- nor do I deal with sheet music (apart from guitar tablature). However, if you are looking for someone to help you get started with basic rock guitar playing or to improve your grasp of the fretboard (scales, modes, barre chords, etc.), I would be happy to help you out.

In terms of qualifications, I have taken years' worth of guitar lessons and played live (guitar and bass) with several bands, in addition to writing and recording music as an amateur/hobbyist. I have no ego as a musician, and I have extensive training as an academic teacher and tutor in subjects ranging from math and chemistry to essay writing and standardized test prep. I am patient and easygoing.

Philosophy

I have a master's degree in History and Philosophy of Science and took numerous philosophy courses in the process, including philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, and philosophy of cognitive science. In addition, I taught an undergraduate course in philosophy of science and another course with a significant philosophy component, and I received very positive student evaluations for both courses. I have also had several peer-reviewed papers accepted at philosophy conferences.

Precalculus

I have years' worth of experience tutoring students in a wide range of math classes, including precalculus. I currently have precalculus students at two schools.

Probability

I have significant experience as a freelance writer and held a job as a staff writer for a music website. I have also taught two college courses (20-25 students per class) in which the bulk of the assignments were essays, and I was the sole person responsible for grading and commenting on all of the essays.

Proofreading

I have significant experience as a freelance writer and held a job as a copy editor for a travel website. I have also taught two college courses (20-25 students per class) in which the bulk of the assignments were essays, and I was the sole person responsible for grading and commenting on all of the essays.

Psychology

I have a PhD in cognitive science, which overlaps with psychology in many respects. As a graduate student, I took several psychology courses, including ones on research methods and data analysis. I have also read and analyzed dozens, if not hundreds, of psychology articles published in professional journals.

Trigonometry

Most of the trigonometry tutoring I do comes in the context of Math II and III, precalculus, or SAT/ACT prep. I have taught Algebra II/Trig at the high school level (2004-2005) and have worked individually with many students on understanding the unit circle (and its relationship to the Pythagorean theorem and the equation for the graph of a circle), graphs of trig functions, and word problems involving trig functions and/or inverse trig functions.

Writing

I have significant experience as a freelance writer and held a job as a staff writer for a music website. I have also taught two college courses (20-25 students per class) in which the bulk of the assignments were essays, and I was the sole person responsible for grading and commenting on all of the essays.

Very patient and explains in detail!

Was flexible to meet our needs. My son felt he benefited from their time together reviewing Pre-Calc. Would definitely use him again in the future to get my son out of a "stuck" position in his math class. Sometimes the class moves forward without all the students being ready and that is what we found William helped us with.
