I have lived in 5 countries: Brasil, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, United States and Argentina. Three of these are Spanish speaking countries. This gives me an awareness of some of the culture of Spanish speaking places as well as practical experience in speaking Spanish. I was also educated in Spanish and English from elementary school through high school, giving me knowledge of the language in theoretical terms as well. I can help those taking English as a Second Language as well as Spanish as a Second Language. I am also capable of providing tutoring for those taking Spanish on a university level. Additionally, I also speak Portuguese and have the capacity to aid those learning the language. In my teaching approach, I can ground language lessons in its cultural context in order to make it more practical for the student.
I have two Bachelor's Degrees, one in psychology and the other in anthropology. I am passionate about helping others, learning about other cultures, and teaching. Furthermore, I have played guitar for over 10 years and am also in the position of teaching guitar to new beginners. Whether it be psychology, anthropology, guitar, Portuguese, Spanish, or English, I will be passionate in the subject matter and interested in the student and their development. I am a good listener, valuing the student's viewpoint and expression as a fundamental part of their growth and learning. Each student has a unique way of learning and it is important for the teacher to work in accordance with that. It is important to bring out their potential through, harness their strengths, and improve their weaknesses through instruction and support. I believe in each person and that each of us is full of potential; my role as teacher/tutor is to bring out that potential and work with the unique way in which the individual expresses that potential. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology.
I have played guitar for 10 years and have taught others how to play. I have a background with theory, improvisation, and song composition. My goal is to help the student learn guitar, develop the skills they need as musicians, and to use the guitar to create their own music and explore new ground as they let their musical potential come to light.
