I have been tutoring and teaching basic algebra through advanced undergraduate level* math for over 10 years. My students and clients have consistently praised my patience and clarity. During my time as a mathematics lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland, I received a Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence and a plethora of glowing student evaluations. In recent summers I have been an instructor and course designer for Duke TIP, where I taught an intensive summer enrichment program for high school students on the mathematics of voting systems.

My approach to tutoring is to help build strong intuition and understanding alongside computational proficiency. By building a solid conceptual framework, you will have to memorize less yet be more prepared to tackle a wide array of problems including ones you haven't seen before. This is a crucial skill for exams and, more importantly, problem-solving in the real world. If you want someone who only emphasizes memorizing formulas, look elsewhere!

In contrast to many math instructors, I understand what it's like to struggle with or be disinterested in the subject. I never would have imagined I would get involved in research or graduate studies in math, but I discovered an incredibly rich and varied discipline with exciting applications everywhere you look. (Machine learning, Google's search engine, computer networking, and internet security are all built on sophisticated mathematics, to give just a few examples.) I can't promise that you'll fall in love with the subject the way I did, but most of my clients come away with a sense that they've learned something valuable and with a deeper understanding than they would have attained on their own. Regardless, building strength in mathematics will develop a host of transferable skills that will prove useful well into the future.

NB: Occasionally, I am asked if a tutor any other subjects. Since my true expertise is in mathematics, along with aspects of the adjacent disciplines of computer science and programming, I prefer to focus on those subjects where I can confidently offer tutoring of the highest quality.

*If you need assistance with a topic more advanced than those listed on my profile, just ask. It's very likely that I'll be able to help. I am especially strong in real analysis, mathematical logic, linear algebra, and related subjects. Conversely, I am largely untrained in number theory, numerical analysis, and partial differential equations.

Calculus,

Calculus

I taught all levels of Calculus as a lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland on multiple occasions and was awarded a departmental Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence for my calculus instruction. My background in the theoretical underpinnings is very strong; I have had approximately 10 different courses in real and complex analysis at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and taught Introduction to Real Analysis at the University of Maryland. I have tutored calculus more than any other subject.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I taught Ordinary Differential Equations as a lecturer at the University of Maryland and received glowing student evaluations. Additionally, I have taken courses in the subject at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I have tutored this course many times. However, I am not well versed in the theory of partial differential equations.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I taught an introduction to mathematical proofs course, which is similar in content to discrete mathematics, at the University of Maryland. I have also taken multiple college level courses on discrete mathematics and related subjects (including theory of computation, mathematical logic, Boolean algebra, and digital design) and have tutored the subject on many occasions. Additionally, I have substantial background in computer programming, for which discrete mathematics is a theoretical underpinning.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

This is one of my favorite subjects and one I work especially hard to instill the intuition that is so difficult to come by during a first exposure. I have helped both students enrolled in courses as well as professionals studying independently to enhance their understanding of applications like machine learning. While a graduate student at University of Maryland, I was a TA for linear algebra and passed a PhD qualifying exam in abstract algebra (for which linear algebra was a major component). As an undergraduate, I had three semesters of coursework in linear algebra at UNCG and was involved in original research on the subject at a Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the College of William & Mary; I received the "Best Student Paper Award" for the resulting research report at the SCRA/FIM XIII Conference on Interdisciplinary Mathematics at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, Portugal.
Logic,

Logic

I have taken multiple courses in mathematical logic, theory of computation, model theory, Boolean algebra, and digital design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at University of Maryland, UNCG, and NC State. Additionally, I passed a PhD qualifying exam in the subject.

Calculus AP Tutoring

Christian was great. He brought his calculus book, and offered tips on mistakes he saw my son make to improve. He helped my son prepare for an exam and my son made a 97. We will continue to work with Christian this year.

Knows his stuff

My 15-year-old son enjoyed working with Christian. He said Christian really helped him understand when he was pretty lost. We have already booked Christian for another lesson.

Knows how to tailor his explanations

I just had my first tutoring session with Christian and it was incredibly helpful. He has a great sense of how to tailor his explanations to what is resonating most with you. He talked through each step, drew graphs and pictures to make sure I was understanding. I look forward to another session!

Patient tutor - Very clear explanations - Expert knowledge.

Christian made the material clear and demystified what could otherwise be a very unapproachable subject. His explanations were not overly technical but fully captured the essence of the material. I highly recommend anyone to take Christian up on his services if you are looking for understanding and clarity with mathematics. You will not regret it!

Great tutor!

I’ve worked with Christian for multiple lessons now. He has a strong mathematical background and is very capable of working through the problems you give him. As a tutor, he stands out in terms of his patience and schedule flexibility. He comes to every lesson with a good attitude, even at very late times, and I’ve never had issues with re-scheduling. The lessons are also worth your time because he has no issues writing out the math problems directly on the board, which is unlike my experience with some other tutors, and he can provide copies of the boards after a lesson. He is also very clear with what he understands and is fair regarding time. Another thing I like is that I can follow up with him after a lesson if I’m still struggling to understand a concept. Overall, he’s a helpful and easygoing tutor. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the mathematics in their courses.

Christian was great at helping me work through a challenging proof

After working with a mathematician and a professor of Boolean algebra, I was still struggling to make my way through a complex proof (Minsky's And / Or Theorem). Christian was excited about spending time on his own looking through the proof, and then enthusiastically discussed the details with me during a session. He explained things in an understandable and intuitive way that was of great value in helping me prepare to lead an extended discussion on the theorem. Thank you!

Calculus

Christian teaches my daughter calculus and my daughter loves the lessons and clarified a lot of info with him. She is much more confident in her calculus class now.

Very knowledgeable and excellent communication

I was very pleased with Christian's knowledge of mathematics and methodology he used explaining it to help my daughter. It turned out that he felt she needed some more review of prior mathematics, and he felt that them working together wouldn't be the best fit. (I respect him being honest about that.) He did put together some ideas and resources for her to use on her own. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because to me, five stars means "I couldn't be happier"... I would have been happier if they had been able to continue to work together to rectify the problems she is having in math. Overall, I would highly recommend Christian for helping understand current, complicated mathematics.
