About Christian

I have been tutoring and teaching basic algebra through advanced undergraduate level math for over 10 years. My students and clients have consistently praised my patience and clarity. During my time as a mathematics lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland, I received a Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence and a plethora of glowing student evaluations. These past two summers I was an instructor and course designer for Duke TIP, teaching an intensive summer enrichment program for high school students on the mathematics of voting systems.

My approach to tutoring is to help build strong intuition and understanding alongside computational proficiency. By building a solid conceptual framework, you will have to memorize less yet be more prepared to tackle a wide array of problems including ones you haven't seen before. This is a crucial skill for exams and, more importantly, problem-solving in the real world. If you want someone who only emphasizes memorizing formulas, look elsewhere!

In contrast to many math instructors, I understand what it's like to struggle with or be disinterested in the subject. I never would have imagined I would get involved in research or go on to study math in graduate school, but I discovered an incredibly rich and varied discipline with exciting applications everywhere you look. (Machine learning, Google's search engine, computer networking, and internet security are all built on sophisticated mathematics, to give just a few examples.) I can't promise that you'll fall in love with the subject the way I did, but most of my clients come away with a sense that they've learned something valuable and with a deeper understanding than they would have attained on their own. Regardless, building strength in mathematics will develop a host of transferable skills that will prove useful well into the future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I successfully studied for and passed Exam P and Exam FM given by the Society of Actuaries.

Calculus

I taught all levels of Calculus as a lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland on multiple occasions and was awarded a departmental Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence for my calculus instruction. I have had numerous courses in the theoretical underpinnings of the subject at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have tutored calculus more than any other subject.

Differential Equations

I taught Ordinary Differential Equations as a lecturer at the University of Maryland and received glowing student evaluations. Additionally, I have taken courses in the subject at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I have tutored this course many times.

Discrete Math

I taught an introduction to mathematical proofs course, which is similar in content to discrete mathematics, at the University of Maryland. I have also taken multiple college level courses on discrete mathematics and related subjects (including theory of computation, mathematical logic, Boolean algebra, and digital design) and have tutored the subject on many occasions. Additionally, I have substantial background in computer programming, for which discrete mathematics is a theoretical underpinning.

Java

I have a strong background in Java, data structures, object oriented programming, algorithms, and theory of computation through a combination of coursework and self-teaching. When I'm not tutoring, I work on programming projects and problem solving more than anything else.

Linear Algebra

This is one of my favorite subjects and one I work especially hard to instill the intuition that is so difficult to come by during a first exposure. I have helped both students enrolled in courses as well as professionals studying independently to enhance their understanding of applications like machine learning. While a graduate student at University of Maryland, I was a TA for linear algebra and passed a PhD qualifying exam in abstract algebra (for which linear algebra was a major component). As an undergraduate, I had three semesters of coursework in linear algebra at UNCG and was involved in original research on the subject at a Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the College of William & Mary; I received the "Best Student Paper Award" for the resulting research report at the SCRA/FIM XIII Conference on Interdisciplinary Mathematics at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, Portugal.

Logic

I have taken multiple courses in mathematical logic, theory of computation, model theory, Boolean algebra, and digital design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at University of Maryland, UNCG, and NC State. Additionally, I passed a PhD qualifying exam in the subject. Note that I am not as familiar with the techniques that are typically used in formal logic courses taught in philosophy departments.
