About Marcel

Are you looking for someone with experience and a passion for teaching to help you increase your musical knowledge? Here I am! With a PhD in musicology from Duke University and experience teaching music history, theory and ear training classes both there and at BYU, I am well suited for the job. Whether you have some proficiency or are just beginning, I can help you learn what you need to know.

For music history I tutor general surveys of music but more specialized topics can be addressed depending on your needs. The Classical period in particular is one area open for consideration. I help the student recognize key elements of the music and their historical significance/context. Theoretical principles underlying the music are also addressed. For music theory, I cover anything from the basics of pitch and rhythm to chord functions and progressions of the common practice period and basic atonal structures. Aural skills include chord and scale types, melodic dictation and harmonic dictation (chord progressions). I teach sight singing using moveable "Do" with hand signals (beginner to more advanced). The student is expected to complete assignments that reinforce the lesson and/or introduce topics for the next one. Diagnostic assessments will also be given periodically to measure progress. All that said, I aim to make learning a fun, pleasant experience.

My schedule is somewhat flexible but please be considerate and notify me as early as possible if you are not able to keep an appointment. Because illness or other situations may arise quickly I ask for a minimum of 5 hours notice, but the earlier you can notify me the better. Missed lessons may be rescheduled. All lessons for a particular student will be given at the same location, which will be determined on an individual basis.

I look forward to hearing from you and guiding you to a higher musical plane.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

My graduate degrees are in musicology, but my work has a strong emphasis on music theory. I have had an interest in composing since high school; since then I have arranged vocal as well as instrumental music, done transcriptions, and composed several original works. A number of my works have been performed in my church and I am currently determining the best way to get them published. My specialty is setting a text to music but I have also written music for piano and assorted combinations of instruments. In addition to playing piano, organ, french horn and voice, I learned the basics of every instrument as a music education major and took a course on orchestration in graduate school. I am also a founding member of an informal composers group in southwest Wake county that meets 3-4 times per year to share works in progress and discuss issues related to composing music.

Ear Training

I taught ear training for three semesters at Duke University.

English

Good writing and textual analysis are skills that I have developed over many years of academic experience. My experience writing mainly stems from papers written for myriad courses while earning my three college degrees (B.A., M.A., PhD), along with my master's thesis and doctoral dissertation. I have also written program notes for performing groups at BYU and Duke. In addition, I taught two freshman writing courses at Duke and, as a T.A. there and at BYU, have graded and advised numerous student papers. All of my writing experience has to some degree involved the critical examination of other texts. As a result, I am familiar with various rhetorical devices, citation styles, and literary techniques and genres.

Grammar

As a T.A. for various undergraduate music courses, I have graded many papers and written exams. I also taught two writing courses for the Freshman Writing Program at Duke University: Academic Writing (required of all freshmen) and a Writing in the Disciplines course in the Music Department for non-majors. I have also written program notes for performing groups at BYU and Duke.

Music History

After earning my M.A. in musicology from BYU I taught an introductory music history survey to non-music majors for 2 semesters. I hold a PhD in musicology from Duke, where I also taught the lab (section lecture) for the introductory music history survey, a writing class on the Classical Symphony, and a class on Beethoven.

Music Theory

For my B.A. in music I took four semesters of music theory, which included the common practice period as well as atonal music, and a class on form and analysis. I learned Schenkerian analysis during my master's program and as a doctoral candidate taught two semesters of music theory and three semesters of aural skills training (music theory lab). Both my master's thesis and my doctoral dissertation feature extensive music analysis, including formal structure and chord function (Roman numeral analysis).

Sight Singing

I taught all 4 semesters of sightsinging while a master's student at BYU and taught sightsinging as part of the aural skills lab for 3 semesters at Duke.

Writing

In addition to grading papers and written exams as a T.A. for various undergraduate music courses I have taught formal writing classes at the college level. These include an Academic Writing course and a Writing in the Discipline course (which I designed myself), both of which were part of the Freshman Writing Program at Duke University.

Polite and reliable tutor

Marcel helped me to learn about simple and compound rhythms. The cost was reasonable and the location was easily accessible. Marcel was willing to work with me and helped me also go over scales.
