About Stephen

My name is Stephen and I graduated from Duke University in 2010 with a B.A. in psychology and a certificate in Policy Journalism and Media Studies. I have a great deal of academic and real-world experience with psychology and English, and am also the author of multiple books and a former journalist at the (Raleigh) News and Observer.

I have written multiple books under my name and numerous others under pen names. I have written for The News & Observer newspaper in Raleigh, and while in college covered athletics for The Chronicle at Duke. I have also worked for four years for the international essay service AbroadEssay, and have either edited or written hundreds of essays for everything from undergraduate programs to law school to technical schools. These essays include personal statements, argumentive essays, marketing proposal samples and CVs, to name a few. This has given me over a decade's worth of experience when it comes to writing, grammar, close reading and understanding of the English language.

I studied psychology for four years at Duke University and was accepted to Wake Forest's master's program in psychology, one of the best master's programs for psychology in the country, based on my coursework, recommendations and research (specifically in self-control).

I also have had success in mathematics. I achieved a perfect score on my ACT in the math and science sections, and used my calculus' teacher's recommendation in high school at Charlotte Catholic to get into Duke University, having never gotten anything lower than an A in algebra and calculus courses.

When it comes to tutoring, I believe the best approach is to guide the students as they figure out the underlying lessons, rather than tell them exactly what they need to do to get a specific answer for one problem. It is much more beneficial for a student to learn the underlying concepts with some guidance than for anyone to give a specific guide that won't help them on test day. Based on this, I like to make sure my students understand the "why" for a correct answer instead of just "what" a correct answer is.

I look forward to working with you and helping you reach your potential in your work!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I achieved a perfect score on this part of the ACT and know what it takes to do well. I have plenty of experience dealing with the rules of English and anything you would see on the ACT. I also have plenty of real-world experience in dealing with the subjects in English you would see in the ACT.

Elementary Math

Throughout high school, I never got anything under an A in any math subject and used my math teacher's recommendation to gain admission to Duke. I tutored math as a member of the National Honor Society in high school and took on some gigs after college. I believe in guiding the student, rather than directing the ship myself, so that he or she can learn the how and the why behind each problem instead of an answer to just one problem.

Writing

I have worked as a journalist and an author, giving me significant understanding of the English language and the grammar and vocabulary. I have edited many works, helping others become better writers. I believe the best way to teach any form of English is to let the student see the big picture for each problem so they can prevent future mistakes in English.
