In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor's degree in French and also in Elementary Education from Slippery Rock University. I am currently a teacher in the Wake County Public School System. I have taught Kindergarten and 3rd grade, but I currently teach 1st grade.
I have experience with teaching phonics in Kindergarten and also in 1st grade. Phonics is a foundational skill for reading, so in the lower grades, all of the students are learning the same skills. However, some students in the upper grades still require extra work in phonics and phonemic awareness. I have experience with this from teaching 3rd grade students that needed interventions in this area.
