I have over 20 years experience teaching all levels of secondary Mathematics, General Chemistry, and Physics, including AP Physics. I have also been an AP Physics Exam Reader. My hours are very flexible. My experience spans public, private, and International high schools as well as introductory college-level physics.
I am an intensely curious person and a life-long learner. It is what propelled me to live and work outside of the United States and what sustains my life-long love of mathematics and the sciences. I do not hide that passion when teaching. Since my curiosity is wide-ranging, I am constantly making connections with other disciplines. As a result, discussions of the historical and philosophical contexts of mathematical and scientific concepts are common in. Teaching for me is not about specific "killer" lessons. It is about day-to-day interactions in which academic pursuits may or may not play a integral role. It is being avuncular rather than pedantic. I want my students to see that the concepts we study are all around us and can be understood by all. Perhaps those mysterious black boxes are not so magical after all. As technology increasingly pervades our lives, this approach is increasingly crucial. I reject the notion that there are students who are "no good at science and/or math".
My career was not always as a teacher. I worked for 13 years in various engineering and sales positions, primarily in the semiconductor industry. My educational background and industrial experience give me a unique, "real-world" perspective that is often not available to secondary-level or undergraduate students. I believe that my ability to provide that is at least as important to the education of my students as my ability to perform in the classroom. I not only know the science, I know the technology and the economics as well.

Thank you so much for helping my son prepare for his chemistry and math level 2 subject tests. I think he is doing very well and probably will
receive a perfect score on chemistry. Stephen is the best teacher!
Stephen was really easy to talk to. I have never really been tutored before and was somewhat intimidated by it but as soon as I met him, that feeling no longer excited. He was eager to help me and taught me at my level and abilities. Today was our first session and Stephen helped me review all of the notes and problems I had done in class along with working out some problems in the textbook. He taught me some nifty tricks to use while solving my problems as well. I am happy to say that we will be meeting on a regular basis now!
A very smart guy, fun to sit with, and very flexible to my needs as a student. I look forward to working with him again.
Working with Stephen is giving my son a lot more confidence in the topic and helping him learn how to ask for and receive help. Stephen is patient, creative, and easy to work with. The help is tremendously appreciated.
Stephen has helped my college student son to improve his grades. My son really enjoys working with Stephen. He looks forward to their weekly meetings, and afterward, always has a better understanding of whatever they are currently working on together.
Stephen is extremely reliable and returns messages promptly.
We tried other Chemistry tutors, but Stephen has been the best! He's not just a tutor; he's a true teacher. He quickly understood that my daughter didn't just need to be shown how to complete problems, but that she was missing some important foundation concepts that had not been taught well in her classroom. She was really struggling and making C's on her tests in Honors Chemistry. She's very bright, and I knew that she could get it if she had a teacher who could help her make the right connections. I found Stephen to be very adept at drawing out her real needs, and understanding where she needed more context for her assignments. And the results so far have been fantastic. On her first major assignment and her first major test after working with Stephen three times, she scored 95% and 101% respectively -- and best of all, she feels more confident in approaching her assignments now. If you want someone to make friends with your kid and have a playful demeanor, he's not for you. If you're looking for a teacher who "gets" your kid's academic needs, is highly professional & takes his role seriously, and uses the tutoring time very efficiently, I highly recommend Stephen.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
