Hello, My love for teaching & working with children comes from my experience as a youth group counselor and officer in several clubs/associations in school. In my years as a youth group counselor I have helped several children with homework after school on a daily basis to working on projects with them for the entire semester. The joy that I felt when a child in my youth group smiled because they did well on a test or simply because they were able to understand how to do their homework was heartwarming. I have been able to positively impact other children as well through my job as a teacher at a daycare. The individualized one-on-one experience that I am able to give my students at the dayare and at my youth group has helped all of them excel in different manners. The joy that I see in each student when they understand what they learn is what has led me to choosing this career path.
I work with students of elementary age, in English, math, reading, science, spelling, & history. I have tutored children from the age of five to the age of 18 for the past five years. I have also worked at a daycare as a teacher for the last eight months with children of the same age group. Being able to work with children from different age groups has allowed me to learn to cater my lesson plans accordingly and in creative ways. With each student that I work with, my student and I start our first session out with an assessment test. Based on the assessment test I am able to better determine the strengths that each of my students has as well as the areas that my student will need help in. Based on that assessment and the homework that the child gets from school I develop a lesson plan accordingly. Every week to two weeks we re-assess the progress that each student is making by taking a quiz. After each quiz I let my students tell me what they feel they need help in, and I talk to them about my expectations with them for the next week or two weeks. Having these open ended discussions has really helped my students feel like they are in charge of their learning, and that feeling motivates them to do better.
In the past five years that I have tutored I have found that using this method has given me the most success in helping my students progress. I am also available to work with high school students for English and prepare them for college application essays. College applications can be extremely stressful and filling them out and trying to keep up with school work becomes a challenge many times for students. To help alleviate some of the stress I have designed a lesson plan that each of my students can follow with deadlines to help them stay on track with their applications as well as stay on track with their school work. The lesson plan includes deadlines for essays, applications, financial aid, recommendation letters, and more. I cater the lesson plan to each student and what their needs are after an initial visit with them.
In my years of experience I have found that excelling in education is a twofold journey, and that is why I set study plans/sessions based on an assessment that I conduct with each child during my first session. As a child progresses in their education goals, I re-assess study plans/sessions. I also feel that a child needs to have a proper environment to learn in so that they are motivated to do well and a way to express their needs/concerns to help them feel like they are in charge of their learning. In order to help them have the proper environment to study in I have a place setup in my home where I can meet my students, however if they prefer to study in a different environment that they are more comfortable in I am willing to travel. I am also open to meeting in public libraries as I have found that those are locations where the environment fosters education. In order to help my students feel like they are in charge of their learning I ask them for feedback on sessions. I am also open to feedback from parents and am willing to change study plans/sessions based on improvement of grades on tests in school.
I think one-on one learning is best, because it is an individualized way to teach, as each student is different and that is why I am flexible with locations to meet, however, I humbly request a 24 hour cancellation notice.
I look forward to hearing from you soon so that we can begin our journey towards making your educational dreams a reality!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
