Since 1996 I have been a freelance writer, copy editor, developmental editor and independent writing coach (rhetorical and expository essay writing -- 4th grade thru college age) and am certified by PCS in Title I Reading (reading fluency and comprehension, K-12).
Title 1 is individual and small group instruction for struggling students in both phonics and whole language using the most current techniques in the remediation of reading based on a federal standards.
Prior to that I taught 8th grade social studies, which in Florida is American History.
I take a holistic approach to working with students.
My belief is that the student's educational outcome is greatly improved when they "buy in" to the tutoring experience. Because of this, I spend a good deal of time discussing goals and outcomes and expressing to the student my belief that they will improve if they apply themselves -- after assessments which includes the student's individual learning style we discuss areas for improvement and do some goal setting. At this point, with school age students, I conference with both the student and parent or sometimes the parent alone if I deem that that is appropriate.
Together the student and I create a personal learning plan, which includes organizational and study skills. My approach includes plenty of encouragement and mentoring -- each of my students leaves our sessions with the confidence and knowledge that they can succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
