About Melissa

I began tutoring physics when I was a student at Davidson College and majoring in physics. I mostly tutored high school students. My experience tutoring a blind student was one of the most rewarding because I had to explain very visual concepts using innovative teaching methods. For example, having a physical ramp for him to feel while we were studying friction was helpful.

After graduating, I moved to the Middle East and taught physics and astronomy at a private boarding school called King's Academy in Jordan. I was a teacher at the school for two years and taught 11th and 12th grade students who were mostly English as a Second Language students. My classroom was based on the modeling method which encourages independent student problem solving. I stressed the scientific method in my classroom, usually presenting a demonstration to spark curiosity and questions in my students at the beginning of class. I would also provide materials so they could design their own experiments in order to reach a scientific conclusion.

As a tutor, I encourage problem solving in my students. I have a lot of practice guiding students toward an answer without telling them the answer. Because of my experience in Jordan, I also have a reservoir of small lab activities and demonstrations that are visual and hands-on and encourage deeper understanding.

I spent one year in Raleigh after living in Jordan and tutored regularly through WyzAnt across many math and science subjects and across many age groups, from grade 5 (Age 10) to the university level. I then moved to Strasbourg, France for 1 year to complete an interdisciplinary Masters in Space Studies at the International Space University. Since May 2015, I have worked for NASA doing astrobiology-related research and mission support at both the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA, and the Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

I am patient and friendly. Outside of physics, I enjoy spending my time dancing, listening to music, writing and doing trapeze.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Thank you, Melissa!

Great tutor, it is obvious she has a great understanding and passion for the subject. My son needed help and she made sure he understand each concept. What everyone has said about her is definitely true: patient, thorough, well prepared, etc. Would definitely recommend her.
