I am currently teaching 3rd Grade in a high-performing charter school in Durham, NC. I have passed the Praxis test for Elementary Education, and I am a Teach For America alumna. I have experience working with children of all ages. I am excited to be working with younger students, as I feel these years have the most impact on, not only their education, but also the course of their lives. I live in Raleigh. I am more than happy to travel within the Triangle to serve your student(s).
I am also a Certified Texas Biology Teacher with experience preparing students for the STAAR test. I taught 9th grade biology for two years, and, with my Kinesiology degree, have taken college-level biology courses. I am passionate about, not only this subject, but working with middle school and high school students. I believe a strong foundation in 9th grade biology will set a student up for success in the rest of his or her academic career.
With my experience working in a high school, I also feel I am able to help students see the big picture - the REAL reasons they must learn biology. High school students often have trouble seeing past the end of the day, and I enjoy helping them envision their futures and motivating them to take education seriously. I am able to help students discover their strengths, research colleges and majors, and find part-time jobs or volunteer opportunities that may allow them to get experience in their areas of interest.
For the first two years of college, I was a journalism major. I have always been extremely passionate about writing and communication, as it is how we interact with others. I love to help students with their communication, whether it be editing a paper, writing a paper, or simply speaking allowed with one another another.
I am also a certified personal trainer and have a certification from NASM. I enjoy sharing this knowledge with students, as I believe it is important to develop healthy habits as a teenager. I am able to teach proper exercise form and write workout programs. While not a certified nutritionist, I am very knowledgeable about nutrition and practice a healthy lifestyle and diet. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
